  1. MB is out of the lineup because there is no place for him to play. They have holes in their chemistry.
  2. Aceves is showing signs of being overpitched. Closing games and then going 2 innings is asking a bit much. The guy isn't that dominant. Bard is in the minors. He should be in the bullpen working out his issues. Gonzo is becoming a bit of a problem--in case nobody noticed. $40+ mil for him and CC this year, and nothing to show for it so far.
  3. Bard is just another position change failure. They have got to get his value back up by restoring him to what he can do well.
  4. Middlebrooks has probably grown out of the SS position. Just like Youks may have bulked up out of the 3B position while playing 1B. I'm surprised Pedey wasn't tried back at the SS position. He could do it for sure. He can do anything.
  5. The kids just picked a SS, Devon Marrero, Arizona State. They spent $8mil on Iggy, so they pick another SS. What about the pitching? Looks like they picked the highest player available on the board.
  6. Looking in the Red Sox draft room tonite, I see a bunch of boys. I hope these kids have at least played some baseball in their young careers.
  7. Just saw the video with Gasper and Finn. The suggestion is he goes to Pawtucket to get unwound. Can they do that with no options? In my view, he should get unwound with some mid relief stints. The feeling is increasing the front office blew it changing roles for him, even though they knew he had a minor league history of failing mentally as a starter. He was switched to reliever and thrived on it. When you factor in Youks' switch to 3B and Ellsbury's switch to LF, none of these position changes have panned out for them.
  8. Good observation. Gonzo and Crawford have hurt this team so far. They did not address needs and took up valuable salary. Epstein figured he could move Youks to 3B, but that has been disastrous for Youks.
  9. The core of the Phillies is the Big 3. With Halladay out, Hamels isn't going anywhere. They'd be fools not to re-sign him. That's their strength.
  10. Right now, I would switch Bard and Aceves. Aceves should be starting--he has 3 good pitches. Bard should be closing--he has 1 good pitch. A closer needs 1 pitch. A starter needs 3 pitches. It's really that simple, Ben.
  11. Bard hasn't shown the consistency as a starter as he showed as a setup man. I still suspect the switch to starter was a cost control factor--cheaper than signing a free agent pitcher. I still think he was the logical successor to Pap--before Henry decided to turn off the money and the FO had to get creative. I looked at the team stats today: the Sox are 2nd to last in team ERA in the AL. And only Colorado is worse in the NL. So they're the 3rd worst team in the majors. Why is this team so bad in pitching the past few years? Is it the fault of individual pitchers? Or the management? Or both? It's a complicated issue, but this team will go nowhere unless it figures out what's wrong with the pitching.
  12. Could be a competition with the Yankees for Garza. My guess is Epstein will trade with the Sox after he ups the price. They have some useful prospects for Epstein. Maybe even Youkilis.
  13. You never know what they are going to do. They don't always keep the best players. Other factors such as contracts and options are often more important. They have a logjam of outfielders: Byrd, Sweeney, Ross, McDonald, Pods, Nava, CC and Ellsbury. They need to demote or trade 3 guys. Crawford is the guy that doesn't fit. Nava is a switch hitter, which helps him. Ross and Sweeney figure to stick. They have to make a deal involving Youks and at least one of the outfielders.
  14. Punto finally showed why the Red Sox signed him today. Played a sharp second base, and hit a HR in the 9th. He's a good defensive fill-in up the middle.
  15. Hey, the kid got 4 hits tonite. He hits like this, they can't keep him out of the lineup. They're winning games with him at the top of the order. I've been saying the kid has a great swing for a couple of years. Now the Globe is saying it too.
  16. If you look at the play Sweeney had to make last night, you wouldn't want Gonzo put into that situation in RF. Sooner or later, Gonzo will muff a difficult play and there will be media criticism. I'm dead against playing guys out of position at the major league level. The fans are entitled to more than that.
  17. If I were trading for Youkilis, I would be looking for him to play 1B. He hasn't shown he can hold up physically at this point playing 3B, and is probably less valuable in trade as a 3rd baseman.
  18. Let's see. We'll give you Youks and Crawford for your salary dumps.
  19. Ha, did you see Pedey last night all suited up in the dugout and ready to go? With that black glove over his thumb? They probably had his leg chained to the railing in case he got any ideas.
  20. There are benefits to keeping the young blood flowing. The Red Sox need to do that more.
  21. Youkilis may well get dealt along with one of those extra outfielders before the deadline--for a starter, maybe. If Youks can show enough. Looks pretty good now, but he hasn't established he can stay healthy playing 3B.
