  1. Thank God I'm on the West Coast for games like this. I'm too damn old to be staying up so late.
  2. Even though Pumpsie Green joined the Red Sox on July 21, 1959, he did not supplant Don Buddin at SS. Don remained as the primary SS until after the 1961 season when he was traded to the Colt .45's for Eddie Bressoud, who was a definite upgrade. Pumpsie remained with the Red Sox as a utility infielder until he got shipped to the Mets. I've spoken to a great number of former Red Sox who played under Pinky Higgins. Nary a one of them had anything even remotely nice to say about him. Tom Yawkey, on the other hand, was well respected by the players.
  3. #11 will always be Frank Malzone to me.
  4. I used to love the All-Star game. Unfortunately, fan voting and inter-league play has made a travesty of what was a great mid-season tradition.
  5. Interleague sucks. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Boston has come to L.A. to play the Dodgers once since it started, nine years ago. It's so unbalanced, it's laughable. To top it off, with Boston playing their division rivals 18 times during the season, I only get to see the Red Sox play one series against the Angels in Anaheim. Whoever does the scheduling should be shot. If I want to see the stars of the National League, I turn on the TV and watch them. They don't have to be playing the Red Sox.
  6. I forgot Don Pavletich. Just what the Red Sox needed - an over-the-hill, self-professed, sore-armed catcher.
  7. Every time I see the Rally Monkey, I can't help but think "typical Angels fan..."
  8. I just love watching a sweep at Fenway West. Was at all four games, definitely more Red Sox fans than Angels. What a great Easter weekend!
  9. I love West Coast games...for obvious reasons. Got tickets to all four games this weekend which is Boston's only visit to Anaheim this year. Now, that really sucks!
  10. Pedro is a better choice than what was tried with Smoltz and Brad Penny.
  11. Manny might as well forget Cooperstown. The only way he is going to get in is to buy an admission ticket, like the rest of us.
  12. Since 1958 when major league baseball came West. I had started Little League and the first baseball card I ever got was 1958 Topps #260 Frank Malzone. From that day on, I was hooked as Red Sox fan.
  13. Which was worse? Watching this game or doing my income taxes?
  14. Tony C, until the Jack Hamilton fastball effectively ended a brilliant career.
  15. Fortunately, I had to attend my Uncle's funeral today. Otherwise, I missed a sucky game...
  16. Stan Papi, the Julio Lugo of the 1970's.
  17. Mel Parnell and Jim Lonborg.
  18. 1. Frank Malzone homering off Don Drysdale in the second All Star game at the L.A. Coliseum in 1959. 2. Ted Williams homering in his final at-bat in 1960. I still have a copy of the L.A. Times with that story on the front page. 3. Yaz's last game, playing left field. I was lucky enough to be in Boston and score tickets to that game.
  19. I've had repect for Buck until now. Talk about a sour grapes attitude. And if you want to know who would make the top five idiot list, try the Boston parking lot attendant that owns the Dodgers.
  20. Funny that the L. A. Times hasn't picked up any of those stories.
  21. I vote for Luis Tiant.
  22. OK, you have my vote.
  23. I'll pass....
  24. At least Tim "Methuselah" Wakefield looked halfway decent tonight.
  25. Saw Valentin crank one out of Anaheim Stadium that didn't come down til the next morning.
