Given what his contract status "appeared to be" when acquired, he was going to garner attention.
He was, and is, a lightning rod of attention. Most people don't take into account that other players at that time signed bloated contracts and have not fulfilled fans expectations.
Add to that the hype of his ability when drafted, expectations may have been just a little too high.
The Philly s*** did not help.
The media has only amplified expectations and the results. One way or the other.
The bottom line is that he has been sort of a right field Wade Boggs. I can live with that.
