Yes. I have said that the injuries held him back in a post this AM. That's why I said "could have been" a mid rotation starter. The injuries have effectively ended that shot.
Appeasing the fans? The Story signing came out of LF. The Sox had just come off an ALCS run. I don't think much appeasement needed to be done at that point. Story was the buy low replacement for Xander since they figured they weren't going to be able to re-sign him.
Most? Not even close. Vast minority at best. By the time that series started, it was over. There was hope after the Yankees sweep in mid August, but they split with HOU when they needed to win the series and then lost to LAD at home and got swept by HOU at home to end AUG. It was obvious that Betts et al ended their season the last weekend in August at the latest. I think the season died early August when TOR swept them at home.
Pythag had 2019 as a 87 win team. They weren't a dumpster fire. The pitchers just had a hangover from the year before (13-17 in April). It was fine. I give that team a pass.
They can lose out the rest of the way and it doesn't matter. The only impact now is draft order. They should just play Abreu, Rafaela, Story (reps) and Valdez the rest of the way. I'd sit any bullpen arm you actually value like Chris Martin. Why risk him hurting himself in a meaningless game?
It doesn't really work that way in baseball. Over the long haul, the manager can get you a few extra wins and maybe manage the bullpen a little better, but I think we overstate how much impact they actually have.
There aren't the x's and o's in baseball that there are in other sports. It's the most individualized of all team sports.
Rogers was terrible in '22 and injured in '23. Not sure how much I'd be willing to part with to get him.
Cabrera can't throw strikes and has a huge injury history. Pass.
Garrett isn't ARB until 2026. No way is he traded.
Luzardo's career is trending in a great direction since leaving OAK, but I think they are going to want a HAUL for him (Per BTV: Bleis, Duran, Gonzalez, Perales, Yorke).
I think Cora is an average manager. Stay? Go? I don't think it really matters. He needs to be given a good team again before I can really evaluate him.
He made SOME good moves, but not enough of them to keep the team above .500. It's clear he wasn't fit for the job. Let him go be the GM for the Rockies or some other club that is happy to just field a team every year. Sox fans can bear one or two down years, but I don't think we saw a path forward that wasn't solely farm built and fingers crossed on the FA acquisitions. That direction takes too long to do. Sox need to sign FA or use the farm to fill holes as needed either through direct promotions or through trades.
Sox are currently 12th in draft order with the Pirates, Tigers and Guardians all 2 games behind them. Sox going 2-8 over their last 10 has certainly helped.
