  1. Must have been pretty egregious, but to do it for a team that was out of contention? Maybe it was messing with someone's contract incentives?
  2. More likely the gain velo than gain more control.
  3. There's a difference between "ceiling" and what is most likely to happen. His ceiling is back end starter. I think he has a better chance to start in the bigs than most of the other guys on the farm, but that isn't saying much.
  4. My assumption was that Slaten graduates this year. I'm generally ignoring him as a prospect and treating him like an MLB regular since he can't be sent down. I'm not a believer in Mata due to his control issues and health plus DFA needs. ERC just doesn't throw hard enough and is a real work in progress. Gambrell will probably be an up and down starter. I don't think he sticks around in Boston. He may kick around the league. Walter is toast as his velo is gone. Coffey is a sidearm soft tosser who had more trouble as he reached AA. I think advanced batters won't have much of an issue teeing off on Coffey.
  5. I'm lighting the Randy Red Sox beacon! https://twitter.com/EricCross04/status/1757118761264357465
  6. Guys that could be that starter: Fitts, Monegro, Paez, Early Decent bullpen arms: Wikelman, Perales, Guerrero, Hoppe, Liu
  7. What would BTV have thought about the original George Scott trade? Scott Lonborg Billy C Lahoud Pavletich for Tommy Harper Lew Krausee Marty Pattin Pat Skrable Why are current GM scared to do TalkSox assed nine player trades like this???
  8. He was a "glorified platoon bat." That's ignoring everything else that was important to his game.
  9. Papi was a one trick pony. He couldn't field. His only job was to hit. Was he a glorified platoon bat? Against some lefties, he stood no chance.
  10. Rice LF Lynn CF Evans RF DH Smith 1B Cooper 1B/DH/LF Yaz I don't see anyway that they still hold onto Ogilvie. It took him a long time to pan out and they had horses coming. You can't really have an OF with Yaz, Rice, Evans, Lynn, Carbo, Smith AND Ogilvie...
  11. Beniquez won one GG and had a 1.1 bWAR 162 game average over his career. I think this is the first offseason I've heard people lament over losing him for Fergie Jenkins. Jenkins in 2 seasons with BOS: 7 bWAR Beniquez in his entire 17 year career: 9.9 bWAR
  12. Carl Crawford averaged an 8.8 BsR from 03-10. Only 4 qualified players had higher BsR's than that last season. No qualified batter over the past 8 seasons has averaged better than 6.1 BsR (Trea Turner).
  13. Carl Crawford DRS per year: 03 10 04 14 05 12 06 5 07 -2 08 11 09 19 10 8 "glorified platoon bat"
  14. David Ortiz's OPS against RHP was 200 points higher than vs LHP, CC's was only 100. Is he a glorified platoon bat?
  15. If we're lumping Wikelman, Perales and Monegro that close together, it's bad news for Perales. It's not the first time I've heard him called a bullpen arm. That bb rate is bad. Him and Wikelman have work to do this year.
  16. "Abreu had a weird 2022 season, walking and striking out at very high rates so that 46 percent of his plate appearances ended in one or the other, and without a ton of other production as a result. His approach ticked up in 2023 as he moved to Triple A — the automatic ball-strike system (ABS) may have helped, although scouts saw a real difference here — and he got to way more power, enough that he’s probably going to be a regular for someone in an outfield corner. He’s got a cannon of an arm for right, and while I think he’s overstretched in center, if he plays there he might end up a 4-WAR player." The guys on the SoxProspects podcast have said as much from time to time about certain players. Umpiring at the lower levels is so awful that it really hurts players with good batting eye. A player like Abreu may take a bunch of called third strikes that would be balls with ABS.
  17. @JustinMLB Steamer projects Yoshida to be a 120 wRC+ hitter in 2024 .292/.362/.461 with a .354 wOBA 18-20 homers as well. That would be tremendous. This would be similar to how Seiya Suzuki and Matsui both had second year bounce backs that I've noted before. Their bounce backs were a little higher than this projection, but I'd take it.
  18. Did you want to see Giolito throwing at ST? https://twitter.com/alexspeier/status/1757067736012738624
  19. CC was fine. The signing just didn't work out. Excessive was signing Hanley AND Panda because it made no sense.
  20. Shake him down for some $$$.
  21. I've heard that Brannon has "light tower power" but that his defense is still a work in progress. Seems like the other catchers just passed him by. I'm not sure I've even seen any highlights of Castro, but he's a guy that some evaluators are getting high on. We'll see how he develops this year.
  22. If he was a versatile defender, he'd be closer to a top 10 guy.
  23. None of us know what the budget is or why it is the way it is. Maybe Theo will be able to right that ship.
  24. I don't think Sam makes any decisions. He's just the mouthpiece for Henry. Henry just isn't around, so he's there to play the telephone game for everyone.
  25. After getting the 2nd WS, I think he started chasing the dragon. That 2007 team was home grown that included a trade for an ace pitcher for a prospect. I don't think he really got out of whack and it's really overstated what happened in 2011. I think some of the players just aged out and there were a few bad drafts 08-10. I think it was all fixable. Just signing Crawford wasn't the end of the world. Even trading for AGon is something that a big club like the Red Sox should be able to do. We saw that they were able to compete for a WS two years later with basically the same team and a few FA's. The next core was the 2011 draft class. Theo would have been fine. He just got in his head and probably needed Larry out of the equation.
