Fenway is just a very weird ecosystem. They messed it up by adding the 406 Club (or whatever it is called now) which reduced HR's and doubles drastically. However, when they put they put the Monster Seats in, HR's went to about league average and doubles skyrocketed back to what they used to be.
Maybe how the OFers are shifted against LHB allowing Monster doubles (rather than having a CF shifted closer to LF helping to hold a runner at 1b) plus there's a big open RF for lefties hitting with authority to leg out doubles.
That was the issue with the Sox going all in on unproven Yoshida. If he didn't really hit, his poor defense was going to really sink the contract. Having him as DH only now is a killer.
Fenway is a better hitters park for lefties than righties. It has a 112 factor for LHB and 104 for RHB. It's the #1 doubles park for lefties by far. That's not the case for righties.
Being 30, you wouldn't attribute the decline completely to age either. IDK. Not watching him day in and day out so only can comment on the metrics and not the EYE TEST.
I clearly said "backup SS (to) bring in for the 8th and 9th inning." His bat is fine on the bench and in a limited sample against tough lefties (733 OPS vs LHP).
Mueller only started 6 games in 2004 hitting 9th.
8th - 182 PA
2nd - 141 PA
7th - 88 PA
9th - 27 PA
Cespedes was eligible to come off the IL today, but is still not in the Salem lineup. He has not played since being called up from FCL.
Let me do some research and see what's going on....
@BGlobeSports
Yoeilin Cespedes, one of the top prospects in the Red Sox system and in the midst of a standout season, has a broken hamate bone in his left hand that will likely require surgery.
Oh...
I could have sworn he was already DFA'd this year or we had at least discussed him. He has the same fWAR as Rafaela. As a backup SS, they could do a whole lot worse IMO! Even if he's a guy you bring in for the 8th and 9th inning, it'd make sense to have him on the bench a la Pokey Reese.
C Wong
1B Romy
2B Westbrook
SS Rafaela
3B Devers
RF Abreu
CF Duran
LF O'Neilll
DH Refsnyder
That's my guess. With Wilyer, he had a 788 OPS against LHP in AAA last season so he's not completely inept against LHP. He only has 33 PA's so far (5 GS).
He had a 961 OPS since being recalled from AAA on 5/29. The problem is not his hitting as he can hit the s*** out of a baseball against RHP. The problem is that he also kicks the s*** out of the baseball whenever he's at 2B. If they are going to be in the playoff hunt, every out matters and you can't have a guy like that playing a MIF position.
