  1. I believe that Dombrowski looked into doing a larger deal, but that no one was made available. I also want no part of Sonny Gray right now. He's struggling and doesn't seem like he'd help us at all this year. I agree that there doesn't seem to be that perfect fit out there. The Braves don't want to move Teheran because they need to field a team next year when they open the new stadium. The White Sox are still in it for now. The Guardians have been playing too well for them to move anyone. The teams that are looking to sell have no arms that are worth spending top prospects on.
  2. That's not necessarily true. I give more weight to stuff on the Fangraphs Tribune and to other reliable sources than to whatever gruel a beat reporter is trying force down my throat.
  3. Based on the asking price around MLB for starters. Braves wanted Moncada and Espinoza and more for Teheran. A's wanted Espinoza for 4 months of Hill. I can imagine that this trade was the best value out there.
  4. Why would Guerra be that high? He's fallen off a cliff this year. Maybe I'm just confused by your rankings as they list Groome and Kopech twice...
  5. It wasn't an overpay. It was the going rate.
  6. He's a good value, you just have to manage his innings better. He's not a workhorse you can trot out there whenever you are in a close game. Maybe the Carson Smith injury really forced the Sox into a tough spot, but you need to give some other pitchers the chance to have high leverage innings (Ross, Hembree, Barnes, etc.). You can't keep throwing the same 2-3 guys out there every day.
  7. That's how you burn through a bullpen.
  8. HR/FB went up to 14.3%. GB rate went down. His velocity decreased. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9227&position=P#pitchvalues He had almost as many blown saves in 2014 as he had in the previous 5 years.
  9. And if they didn't trade for a SP and Espinoza flames out, they'd be just as screwed.
  10. But if you worry about "potential value," you'd never trade any prospect because the future is uncertain.
  11. Who would you want out of a deal involving Devers?
  12. Don't let the Boston media fool you. That clubhouse attendant deserved what he got.
  13. What if the Cubbies don't win a WS? What if he starts feeding the monster in the Cubs organization and signs a bunch of questionable contracts that hamstrings them too? Would he still be one of the greatest then?
  14. And maybe the lack of use is why he blew up on the 2nd? Farrell's use of the bullpen is definitely a concern for me.
  15. There's nothing wrong with overusing a 41 year old bullpen arm?
  16. It's a shame that he spent the last 5 years of his time with the Sox not being able to draft or develop starting pitching.
  17. He also has a 4.50 ERA over the past 14 days.
  18. But you claimed "he's going through a rough patch." How is that a rough patch exactly?
  19. Why do you think it's an overpay? It seems like that is the going rate to acquire a pitcher like Pomeranz. Remember, the A's would only move Hill (injury guy, contract ends in October) for Espinoza.
  20. If Espinoza was in AA, you wouldn't trade him. Right now, he's just to far away to even project anything. Pitchers flame out more often than hitters. The Sox screwed up the rotation so bad (picking up Buchholz's option, relying on Kelly) that they basically forced this trade. If they moved Espinoza for a rental, it would have been a horrible move. They moved him for a solid #2 guy who just pitched in the AS game.
  21. He has 1 Quality Start in his past 4 outings. This break out may be running out of time.
  22. Honestly, it was a real panic move for Farrell to keep trotting Koji out there.
  23. He had one awful performance that has skewed his numbers. Can't really say it's a "rough patch." He hasn't given up any runs in all 5 of his appearances since getting lit up on 7/2.
  24. It's the difference between rooting for the Red Sox and fantasy baseball. At the end of the day, I would like my pretend fantasy team to do well, but I'd rather the Sox win a title than my fantasy team. You don't hoard prospects because they are shiny new toys that you want to keep in the package because they may have value someday.
  25. That's a tremendous "IF." If Pomeranz pitches like a #2 for the next 2.5 years, I don't care what Espinoza does for the Padres.
