I wouldn't give up on him per se, but guys like Randy Johnson and James Paxton had stuff that could fool MLB guys. All Owens has is an offspeed pitch that is decent, but is paired with a very poor fastball that won't fool many major league hitters. That doesn't really translate for long term success.

Because stat heads come off as boorish wet blankets who can't let anything go and have the personality of a swamp monster. "Wow, great sac bunt there." "Well, here's a million reasons you're wrong! Sacrifice bunts are the worst blah blah blah blah blah blah blah insert s***** table blah blah blah blah." If you're unable to allow others a moment of joy because you are all consumed by stats, it probably means you aren't enjoying that moment either.

I'm sure Pomeranz would be much cheaper than Porcello, but you get what you pay for. I'd rather spend the money on Porcello if he keeps pitching like last year and not re-sign JBJ.

Paplebon had a great fastball with a splitter and a slider that he had varying degrees of command and control over. Once he lost a tick on his fastball, his career went downhill fast. If you have one dominant pitch, you still generally need another pitch or two that you can still throw once in a while.

Worrying about a cliff that is 4 years away is a very pessimistic view imo. How can anyone say the farm will be garbage and there will be nobody to call up when they have 4 years of drafting and IFAs? Mookie was drafted in 2011 and was in the show 3 years later. It's possible that the replacements for the guys that leave via FA aren't even in the organization right now.
