  1. Some might call this a challenge trade: you give me the guy I want, I’ll give you the guy you want and we’ll see who’s right. But Dombrowski actually would have preferred giving up a group of lesser prospects had that been on the table. “I’d rather trade three other type guys than Anderson, but that wasn’t appealing to San Diego,” Dombrowski said. The only way to get a good starter was giving up a good piece.
  2. Well, even Soxprospects hasn't said they were fleeced. Given the team they have right now, especially on offense, and the lack of starting pitching options both at the big league level and in the high minors, the opportunity to acquire a 27-year-old pitcher who has shown the ability to be an impact starter and has two more years of team control was likely too good to pass up. Our team was already s*** in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Might as well try for the rings when you can.
  3. My first reaction was that it was an overpay. After sleeping on it, I feel a little better. I'm always amused by the "well they shoulda grabbed this other guy" or "they shoulda just given worse prospects for this guy" crowd. We'll never really know what was available and who the other teams want. At the end of the day, you either want to upgrade your starting rotation or you don't.
  4. Objectively, we're not in last place this year which is a large step up from 2014 and 2015.
  5. They kept their best prospects. Aces take a larger haul than what we gave up. Guerra is also well out of the top 50 at this point.
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/drew-pomeranz-on-his-knuckle-curve/ Click if you want to see a GIF of Pomeranz making Ortiz look silly.
  7. Lester was a very minor role in 2007. They certainly could have won without him. Also, Lester was already an MLB fixture by 2007. Espinoza is still years and years away.
  8. I've heard this as well.
  9. But I thought Kelly and Buchholz were quality arms, no?
  10. You do know that he signed yesterday?
  11. I never said he wasn't a valuable pitcher.
  12. I never said we gave up blue chip prospects (though we did for 2007). My point was that the staff construction wasn't based on homegrown talent.
  13. I love it when posters think they know everything about a prospect when they get their news from Soxprospects.com. I follow Soxprospects and will continue to listen to the podcast. However, you have to take a lot of what they say with a grain of salt.
  14. The job of the GM is to trade away the right prospects. Holding onto every prospect is bad business. You need to put trust in the scouts that say whether a deal is good or not. I understand that there is concern for the future, I feel the same way, but the farm system hasn't been gutted. We held onto our 3 best prospects and acquired a #2.
  15. For everyone worrying that Pomeranz only has 2 pitches: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/drew-pomeranz-now-with-50-more-pitches/
  16. Fine FA's instead of trades. Not much of a difference in my opinion.
  17. All 3 of them were and that was the joke. It was sarcasm.
  18. They have nothing else.
  19. I think they made out well. Not every trade has to involve a winner and a loser.
  20. But most of those guys didn't pitch as well as Pomeranz has this season. I see Kershaw, Price, Felix, Lincecum and Verlander (maybe Cain) as the only guys it would have been dumb to trade for when they were 18 and 4 years away from starting. The majority of those guys are expendable at age 18 for Pomeranz.
  21. I agree with this. These are the moves the Padres need to make, not the garbage pail collection of OFers they've been going for the past 2 years.
  22. The 2013 staff was Lester, trade, trade, trade, Buchholz (who was injured). The bullpen was FA and trades aside from Taz, Doubront and Workman. Less than 50% was homegrown.
  23. Which pitching prospect did they trade away that became good?
  24. Pedro threw better as a 19 year old in AAA than Espinoza is doing as an 18 year old in A. We'll see if Espinoza is pitching well in AAA next year.
  25. Funny how they won 3 WS without obtaining pitching.
