  1. If you're punting on 2020, 2021 AND 2022, you may have just as well re-signed Mookie and traded away all the shorter term contracts (JD, Price, et al). You would have gone under the lux tax in 2022 at the very least and managed to retain one of the most marketable stars Boston has ever had. It just shows me that it was about cost savings long term rather than just getting under the lux tax for that one year. "Hey, we're not going to compete until 2023 so we gotta get under the lux tax in 2020 by dealing Mookie." "Couldn't you just re-sign him and get under in 2022? If you're not planning on competing until 2023, it at least gives the fans something to watch." "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"
  2. But for the longer view, at one point would they become buyers during FA period again? Is it wait until 22-23 offseason?
  3. But the "hey, it's something right" logic could never fly when you have an agreed upon CBA.
  4. They wanted to expand it without increasing the pooled money. Any team that has a payroll above $50M or so, players would make less per game in the playoffs than the regular season. The only way it gets close to a normal payroll is if your team manages to win the World Series.
  5. Odorizzi makes a lot of sense just because of the question marks surrounding the health of the current starters. I would bet against them signing him though.
  6. The issue is that we have been told in the past that we were resetting in 2020 so that we could go back above in the future. When will they go back above? That was the carrot they dangled for us holding our noses last year. Remember, it's not our fault that they signed some above market extensions. Henry allowed DD to run roughshod over the budget in 2019 for no added benefit. In 2004-5, the Sox let go of a lot of FA's. They were in the afterglow of a championship and fans understood. This time around, they figured it would be better to just re-sign everyone to bring the 2018 back together for 3 more years or whatever.
  7. Well, they better get that #4 pick right. Can't Trey air-Ball it.
  8. They may sign Odorizzi (doubt it), but they won't be signing Ozuna. They could sign Odorizzi and get under the cap at the deadline.
  9. We've talked about this elsewhere, but I don't think installing universal DH fixes anything. It can combat part of the problem, but it needs to go much further. 1. Market MLB stars better 2. Pitch clock to speed games up 3. Get rid of replay 4. Robot umps 5. Universal DH 6. Revamp current tv production (product is stuffy and old) 7. More urban youth baseball programs
  10. The problem is that ownership brought it up as a negotiating ploy rather than just saying "hey, we're keeping the DH this year." Ownership wanted to trade universal DH for expanded playoffs (aka more unpaid games for the players).
  11. My son is playing his 5th year of little league this year. He has zero interest in actually watching an MLB game. Great job MLB. I had him ask his teammates last year who their favorite player was and who the best player in MLB was (just so that he could get to know his teammates better). Most of them didn't have a favorite player and some of them couldn't even guess as to who could be the best player (most often the answer was either Trout or Betts).
  12. I'm sorry, but idle chatter on TalkSox >>> mlb.com stories
  13. I think taking Pablo and Hanley, but not signing Max Scherzer (rotation was Kelly, Buch, Masterson, Miley, Porcello) makes me not miss Ben too much.
  14. Also, you can go over it now, then deal people away at the deadline for prospects to get back under it if you want.
  15. So the question would be, at one point will the Sox go over the lux tax again?
  16. New England Talkshow listener/viewers are not the majority of fans.
  17. Threat Alert Level: 7
  18. Duran is not viable in CF right now. His defense is not consistently good yet.
  19. That’s a no from me, dog.
  20. Like more weed
  21. And that includes a draft with only 4 picks (loss of 2nd).
  22. They like Brice's spin rate. I don't like the spin rate of the ball coming off the bats he faces.
  23. Those dumb catwalks are going to get worked over this year.
  24. Kiké plays both CF and 2B at the same time like Buggs Bunny.
  25. Perez to get on 40 man or wait until Sale can go on IL?
