I'll bet dollars to doughnuts he either ends the season with an FIP and ERA+ below league average, or on the IL. Lots of crappy pitchers have good half SSS seasons. Eovaldi I can buy because he's always had amazing stuff, but Wacha has been mediocre for years, and his batted ball profile is terrible. That's not a hill you want to die on.

Ohtani is a mighty high injury risk for a guy that's going to end up making some small market team's entire payroll on a season-to-season basis.

Yeah but in Lackey's contract, it voided the last year of the deal, the new TJS clause model adds years based on a lower AAV to the contracts, with DeGrom being an example.

No, I get that point. That's what I meant by guys who don't overpower. A guy throwing 90 living by pitch mix isn't going to get much out of throwing a max effort 93 out of the BP if he can't establish his arsenal longer term. If you sit 94 and can throw 98 out of the 'Pen, that's another can of worms.

I'll also go out on a limb and argue that we shouldn't consider Houck a bust as an SP yet. The stuff is there, it's a matter of better control of the strike zone overall.

So apparently teams are including TJS provisions into contracts now. Elbow problems are an epidemic.

Drafting the best available players is a sound draft strategy. I'd argue their current draft strategy is sound overall. The problem appears to be more centered around the development aspect.

2015 had Joe Kelly, Clay Bucholz and Henry Owens Last time the Sox had three homegrown guys in the rotation.

2012 had Lester, Bucholz and Doubront.

Most guys with a good and varied but not overpowering arsenal are better as starters. And a knuckleballer in relief is asking for trouble.
