They are gambling on Paxton either way. If they are going to sell, trade him, if they want to go for it, keep him. I don't think the argument can be made that this team is better without Paxton in its rotation, regardless of the injury caveats.
It shouldn't be an argument that being able to add regular contributors from the farm to the MLB roster is a must to be able to create a sustainable contender. The economic landscape in baseball isn't what it used to be, as salaries have exploded while the league punishes teams for lavish spending. Also, the best teams in the league over the past 5-7 years (Dodgers and Houston) have adopted exactly this model. Gotta copy the teams that clearly have the formula for success.

Pretty cool huh?
That's a skill. For all of the flack DD gets for trading the farm, he's been able to keep most of the prospects who develop into good players and trade away the duds.
With all due respect, something tells me you don't really have a grasp on the actual valuation of the current farm system, or why they have assembled it the way they have. MVP is absolutely right in regards to player development by the way, pitchers are a very risky proposition. It's better to develop hitters and sign elite pitchers while trading for your above average guys.
No, I personally would not be surprised, but I bet you'd be surprised to know it's not really that simple. The CBO determines draft strategy, resource allocation and helps develop the draft/IFA board. Let's not diminish their impact.
A bunch of guys would end up HOF or HOVG if they hit their ceilings. But as you know, that's not usually what happens. Bello's framework and tools for being a great starter are there, health permitting. But is he coachable? Will he take well to trying to improve his fastball? How healthy is his arm? Lots of questions.
I want this team to produce a sustainable contender, and I like the work he has done reworking the farm. Because of increased parity and a harder climate to gain a competitive advantage or exploit inefficiencies in the market, I give the edge to Bloom over DD and Ben, who is my least valued GM that I don't actively dislike.
