  1. Any lineup that features David Ortiz playing 120 games at 1B sucks. That is all.
  2. Ortiz has been a full-time DH since 2003. I don't buy that. Not to mention that from the standpoint of Ortiz' physical well-being, the worst thing that could happen is having him play the field.
  3. Based on what? That really doesn't make much sense. If anything, having to worry about playing 1B may actually distract him enough to make those slumps worse.
  4. My perfect offseason? Werth, Dunn, Olivo/Buck. Three of: Benoit/Putz/Balfour/Uehara/Frasor/Fuentes/Feliciano/Mahay/Takahashi. I really like V-Mart, but i think the option that makes the most sense is rounding out the IF, getting a strong OF bat and a catcher who won't embarrass himself at the plate (which leaves Schneider out of the equation).
  5. Beltre + Werth + fix the bullpen? Or Dunn + Werth + fix the bullpen? I'd be ok with both scenarios.
  6. Jeter with a GG? Lol. Everyone from statheads to people who watch Yankee games know he's not a very good shortstop. The GG awards are a joke. Matthew Leach on the subject: Gold Gloves need a better voting process. It's beating a dead horse, but i agree with almost everything he says.
  7. Career .324 OBP, .698 OPS. The only two years in which Schneider's had an OBP above .330 as a "regular" he had either 125 AB's (injury) or a year in which SLG% was a pathetic .367. Guy sucks at the plate. No way to spin it.
  8. Because, just like "buzz", you haven't defined what you mean by "impact". If having a starting spot on a team like the Sox isn't making an "impact" then you just changed the definition. You also mention that there are no "impact" bats in the system, yet refuse to acknowledge both Lavarnway and Rizzo, who may indeed be members of the team as soon as 2012 depending on the circumstances.
  9. Kalish, Lavarnway, Rizzo, Iglesias. Four "still in the system" guys who are more likely than not contribute to the ML club between now and '12. If that's not a system "bearing fruit" then i don't know what it is.
  10. Lavarnway and Iglesias may both find themselves at Fenway come 2012. And what is this about Iglesias' bat "not making any buzz"? He's never going to create any buzz with his bat when scouts are drooling all over his glove, and he's obviously not going to be a power guy. Besides, how many guys does this team really need to graduate come 2012, i ask?
  11. Yeah, that's kinda not how it works. Youk, Pedey and Lester weren't "Blue Chippers" either, and look at what's happened with them. Not to mention that the system is currently very bottom-heavy, but there are undeniably loads of talent in the lower levels.
  12. Who were these "journeymen type guys with career years"? You could make a case for Darnell, but Bill Hall clubbed 36 HR's in 2006, so no career year. Who then? Nava (1st year player), Eric Patterson (He sucked). Who?. The fact is whatever "career year" type of production we got from role players wouldn't have approached the production of a healthy Youkilis, Pedroia and Ellsbury. Beckett's average FB velocity dropped from 94.3 in 2008/09 to 93.5 in 2010. This takes 30 seconds to look up. That is a good question but it's not a make-or-break issues. Jonathan Papelbon, while a problem, was not the main problem of the bullpen, a bullpen which should be addressed for the coming season. Not a make-or-break towards the contending status of the Sox either. He'll get replaced, and it won't be a problem, since this year's market is flooding with MRP. His "range" being pretty lousy is something you're obviously making up, good sir. Scutaro's range is pretty decent, and that's something that both watching the games and his advanced fielding metrics will tell you (-2.9 UZR, even with the injury) his problem was obviously his already weak arm being even weaker due to the injury. Marco Scutaro was not a problem for this team in 2009, and will probably not be a problem but a strength if healthy during 2010. If he's healthy, he can be. If he can't he doesn't play or gets cut. Simple as that. If the Sox sign a FA OF (and they probably will) it's a very real possibility he gets traded. Ok.
  13. So the Sox aren't going to contend? News to me. They won 89 games last year with a squad that had players with more days on the DL than Tampa, Toronto and Baltimore combined. By the way, you do seem like BOY.
  14. Your numbers are a bit off. With the increase to the luxury tax ceiling, the red Sox actually have around 40 million to play with. That would allow them to sign one of Crawford/Werth (16 mill), Martinez, (13 mill), then allocate the rest of the resources towards a stopgap at 1B and the BP.
