  1. He's not worth $8-9 million at this stage in his career. His arm is shot. I would be surprised if he gives them 20 starts.
  2. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=3853055 "...Treated this game with the utmost respect, honored this game and its past heroes." "...Integrity that I've had in this game is something that I'm very, very proud of." I read this as him saying he never juiced. Thoughts?
  3. For whatever reason, Piniella never really gave Pie much of a chance. Maybe he was afraid of a sequel to the Corey Patterson saga. Like most moves the Cubs make, this will probably come back to bite them in the ass.
  4. For $5 mil Dunn would be quite a bargain, but I don't see where he fits on the roster.
  5. Markakis is a five-tool player. Any team would be lucky to have him.
  6. I wouldn't give up on Ortiz just yet. Give him another year. See if he can bounce back. However, he needs to get a grip on himself and stop throwing everyone under the bus just because the great Manny is gone.
  7. Meh is right.
  8. Sabermetrics is a valuable tool in determining how good players are/were. But somtimes I think people put too much emphasis on it and too quickly dismiss the counting stats. I guess we just have different schools of thought. The counting stats are certainly a lot sexier, but as is the goal of sabermetrics there may be more objectivity in your school of thought. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
  9. I'm with Coco on this. But with legends like Bill Mazeroski, Tony Lazzeri, and Joe Gordon in the HOF you could seriously make a case for just about anyone who had a halfway decent career.
  10. Dawson certainly deserved it over Rice. So did Blyleven. But I'm happy for Rice. Going to the Veteran's Committee is like going to limbo.
  11. Exactly. He would be an enormous upgrade. I don't know why he's getting so much hate on this board. Before '08, he had 5 seasons in a row with over 200 hits and a .300+ average. The guy's also durable. Doesn't miss more than 5 games a year. Granted, the numbers might be a little inflated because he plays in Texas, but it's not like Fenway is a pitcher's park.
  12. The Twins have overachieved mainly because of a good farm system, Joe Nathan, and Ron Gardenhire. If Slowey, Blackburn, and Perkins develop they could have a really strong starting rotation in a few years. They need more pop in that lineup, though.
  13. Yeah, but look at the guys you've gotten from the Sox: Ruth, Boggs, Clemens, Damon. I'd say they have you beat as far as bitterness goes.
  14. Jack Cust has to be one of the best names ever.
  15. Agreed. Slightly above average, not really an impact player.
  16. Nomar Round 2.
  17. Lots of speed, lots of pop. My lineup would be a little different: Iwamura Crawford/Upton Upton/Crawford Longoria Pena Burrell Navarro/Joyce Joyce/Navarro Bartlett
  18. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3801716
  19. Their lineup is pretty formidable now. I'm with you bosoxnation07. Parity is a good thing, even if it means the Red Sox will face more adversity.
  20. In bold are the guys I'd vote for. Harold Baines †Jay Bell Bert Blyleven †David Cone Andre Dawson †Ron Gant †Mark Grace †Rickey Henderson Tommy John Don Mattingly Mark McGwire Jack Morris Dale Murphy †Jesse Orosco Dave Parker †Dan Plesac Tim Raines Jim Rice Lee Smith Alan Trammell †Greg Vaughn †Mo Vaughn †Matt Williams
  21. Not for the Cubs, though. Aaron Miles, upgrade? Not even close. Let's see what Fontenot can do. Cubs are killing the (White) Sox. Wood and DeRosa on the Guardians... that AL Central just got a little tougher.
