  1. I can't imagine this season hinging in any reasonable way on whether or not we retain the services of Aaron Cook. Get a grip, people. Just because it says "pitcher" next to his name and he has a few good games in pawtucket doesn't mean he's a solution to our pitching problems.
  2. Has it been your experience that mental blocks just go away? If you don't have the head to pitch in the big leagues, then you don't have the head to pitch in the big leagues.
  3. Not really speculation. Just the nature of that kind of pitcher. The good ones of that sort are just better at tempting hitters with their stuff. It's not like they can never come into the heart of the zone, but they better not live there.
  4. You're not correct. If you're hurt, the first thing that goes is control. One of the first signs that an injured pitcher is in trouble is that he can't get it over the plate Of course it depends on the injury to an extent. A lower body injury would impact velocity more. But Daisuke had a shoulder/elbow/TJ problem, and that affects command.
  5. I'm just talking about what I observed from watching him pitch. Sure, he could top out where he always did, but when you're hurt, your command falls off and you have to drop velo to throw strikes. Saw a lot of that ever since the 07 break. And it's not all about Daisuke lacking confidence and nibbling either.
  6. Daisuke got through 08 on pure deception. In early 07 he had the legit stuff he was supposed to have and could muscle it up to 96 consistently. I have no idea what happened but by the end of 07 he was sitting 91. I've bored you to tears with my Daisuke-has-been-nursing-an-injury-since-the-07-all-star-break theory but everything I've seen since tells me not to ignore the possibility.
  7. Well I'd take Daisuke over Buchholz right now. How could you not? Buck needs to get something worked out.
  8. He doesn't have the stuff to come into the heart of the zone consistently. The difference between a guy like Cook and most pitchers is that he's better equipped to nibble because of his excellent command. If he leaves one in the sweet spot though, he doesn't have the velo to keep hitters from launching it into orbit.
  9. They've had enough high picks over the years, it's about freaking time. I don't think they'll sustain it, but that's a good talented team now.
  10. When was the last time Daisuke was consistently 'on form'? 4 years ago? 5? This is a good exhibit of just how perverted this has gotten. If it was just about Daisuke, his arrival would have been met with a resounding "meh" because that's all he's earned in this uniform, but for some reason, everyone's all just-wait-until-Daisuke-gets-back. Like it's some kind of messianic coming or something. People are pulling for Daisuke now exclusively because he's the one best chance of them getting Bard in the pen, regardless of the fact that Daisuke has been mediocre and inconsistent for his entire freaking career with the Sox and hasn't been a match for what Bard is doing right now as a starter since the first few months after his arrival in the States. It's bizarre.
  11. Yep, he's a smart man, who did a lot of things right. But just because LaRussa did something doesn't automatically mean that it was smart to do. If you start thinking otherwise, then you have created a cult of personality around LaRussa. I mean he is a good manager, but...
  12. Aceves was right, that was a strike.
  13. Dang. Aceves starting to turn it around.
  14. Probably because he's mad at the FO -- because he knows it's not going to happen -- and because it wouldn't mean a thing to tell them, he rants here to put how he feels into words and arguments in front of SOMEONE. In other words, pretty much the same reason most of us present arguments here about our issues with the team.
  15. Let me put it this way. I'm not going to angst about relievers who have the odd bad outing as long as the pattern is OK.
  16. Ehh, relievers are inconsistent. If they were consistent they'd be starters.
  17. He started it clean. It wasn't his best night.
  18. This is why numbers aren't the only things that matter. That was a clutch situation.
