  1. If Lavs were a defensive catcher in any way, shape or form I'd be more sympathetic to this. He is no more of a pitcher's catcher than Salty is and he actually has much less professional catching experience.
  2. It's premature to trade Youkilis. How many times have we seen a rookie like Middlebrooks start out hot and then fade to average or so? WMB id talented, but that doesn't mean he's ready to be consistent over a full MLB season. Unless you're willing to commit to the possibility of winding up with Aviles at third and someone like Iglesias at short, I'd hold onto Youk until we've seen what WMB looks like after the new-rookie smell fades away.
  3. When did Mikey lose his job to a hot rookie? Half the reason we got stuck with Lowell so long is that Lowrie couldn't take over either as the SS or as the 3B.
  4. Felix didn't do half bad tonight. The Royals are a bit underrated now because of a 12 game losing streak. They're probably going to finish up third in that division. In lieu of an actual good performacne I'll take the fact that Doubront can recover from getting roughed up, get some outs and save the bullpen.

  6. I really don't believe that. Beckett is the scapegoat, not the problem, and most of the time he backs it up on the field, which is better than most of these guys can say.
  7. There's that thing where people make the bizarre mistake of assuming that minor league numbers matter. Why does that keep happening? His last trip through the minors Salty had 4 PBin 61games which puts him on pace for a very reasonable 12-or-so for a full year. That didn't stop him from leading the freaking league in them last year. Pitches are harder to predict in the big leagues for hitters, why are we surprised that they would be for catchers as well?
  8. What do you gain from dumping on Adgon right now? He's here for he next 5 years, or is it 6, regardless of whether he's popular in Boston or not. He's not going to be shipped out. He's not going to be anything but our starting first baseman for the entire life of that contract. So there is no satsifaction to be gained from venting your spleen here. Any momentary relief will be short-lived because he'll still be our starting first baseman tomorrow -- no matter what. There's a time and a place to pile on a player who isn't performing. Boston fans have proven to me time and time again that they have absolutely no clue whatsoever when that time and place is.
  9. Need a "still reserving judgment" option.
  10. Andrew Bailey is a nonfactor because you can't look me in the eye and tell me that you know this cat will ever pitch for the Sox for an extended period of time. I shoulda grayed him out rather than whited him, when I went back to amend the list and put Daisuke and Kalish gray I missed him in the list.
  11. Yes. Yes he can. I'm not even going to try to claim that Salty is a good catcher. But at least we know he's an actual, full time catcher. We don't know that about Lavarnway. This guy's been catching professionally for only about 3 years, and was a part time outfielder before then. His tools are OK -- for a guy who will be earning his daily bread with the bat -- but he's very raw even for that. The best case scenario for Lavs is at about the Mike Piazza level, with plenty of room on the downside. A rough comparison of their potential at the same stage of development would have shown Salty MILES ahead of Lavs in every category but offensive power. And I say that as a guy who really likes Lavarnway on the whole.
  12. There's no point in playing nice with the media right now. No matter what Pedrioa says or doesn't say, the media feeding frenzy looks pretty much the same. If he says nothing, they'll blast him for saying nothing. If he gives talking points, they'll blast him for having no heart. If he takes them to task and challenges them, they'll blast him for being petulent. There is no "winning move" here. The media has been waiting for a year like this for more than a decade, all the old negative Nellies who haven't had much to complain about for years are feeling like their time has finally come, and they're bound and determined to make the most of it. It doesn't matter what any one says, or doesn't say. NWIH can they resist the blood in the water now.
  13. This is not Cherington's fault. The guy who orchestrated this mess is Lucchino if it's anyone. You can't fire the owners, and firing the manager and GM the year after you fired the manager and GM just makes you look weak, so Lucky really needs to take any fall that's being taken here.
  14. Complete nonfactors whited out. Minor players at best in gray.
  15. People who want to think there's a quick fix to get this team back to elite status are going to be disappointed. We achieved a critical mass lf offensive talent between 2001-2009 that was hard to match. Don't be surprised if matching it turns out not to be easy. Frankly I think we need a fundamental improvement to all aspects of the team before we're going anywhere. And I don't know that you're going to be able to do that in 1-2 seasons, much less this year.
  16. He shouldn't have been out there in any inning.
  17. Ask this fan whether a starting freaking pitcher "looking OK for the first 2 innings" counts for a warm bucket of ****
  18. This guy needs to never throw another pitch for the REd Sox. He should never have thrown a first one.
  19. Rivera is a class act an an all-time great. He had to go sometime, but I honestly hope he isn't done, because the league and the sport will lose something when he's gone for good.
  20. Yep he's hurt. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120503&content_id=30328258&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb Knees are unpredictable, but having to be carried off the field is not a good sign.
  21. Heard on another team's broadcast Mo was taken off the field on a cart. Knee. No other details. Figured since it was Mo, it was probably worth its own thread.
