  1. Ehh. Byrd did the minimum. Good enough.
  2. Would you rather pitch to a kid like Nava who's hotter than hell right now, or to Marlon Byrd?
  3. You guys ever going to promote Venditte? I've always found him a fascinating concept, and he seems to be doing well enough to get a showing.
  4. He was stronger in that 8th than he was in the first.
  5. Lester has a chance to finish tonight. I'd like to see him do it if possible.
  6. Well there's a difference between vegetarianism and veganism. Veganism really isn't very good for you. Some people find enough other things to do to get healthy that they can get away with veganism, but it's not the most efficient way to keep your body nourished.
  7. I'd take my chance and save the pen too. We have a 5 run cushion and Lester's no stranger to the 8th in his career.
  8. I think we can do better for him than that. Especially since our planned starting outfield is full of platoon hitters. If our 4 OF's are Crawford, Ells, Ross and Sweeney, there should be some room for a switch hitter to spell a lot of those guys, if he can hit. And I think since we have a rare chance to really get the kid some playing time, finding out if he can hit doesn't hurt anything.
  9. What should happen is that we cut bait with DMac and Byrd and keep both.
  10. That's why I said what I did in the thread I created, where I said that Nava had some things in his approach and style that reminds me of Dustin Pedroia. A lot of defiance in the way both of these players approach the game. Sometimes you just gotta ride a guy like that out and see how far he can go. Every now and again you get a story that shocks you.
  11. Have you seen the offensive numbers most 4th OF's are good for? If he's anywhere near adequate defensively, his 09 line is fine for a 4th. To say nothing of it he can improve on it.
  12. Sorry. I was behind the wheel all day getting little bro back to college. BTW who's calling Nava a starting player? I'm calling him a good backup, which with his demonstrated contact/line drive ability, he could easily be one. I want to know when bench players stopped mattering in this town. And when having a guy who could switch hit and make good contact off the bench stopped being a good thing. Oh and a700 -- that homer he just hit was for you so wear it proudly.
  13. Nice to see the kid back on form this year. He's a late bloomer, got to the pro game pretty old (25) so it took him awhile to figure out, but this guy's an ideal Fenway hitter because the man is a doubles machine. Not a lot of HR power, but he sprays to all fields from both sides and can hit some screaming line drives. Quick hands at the plate allows him to get around on a mistake pretty easily and parts of his hitting style remind me of a switch hitting Pedroia Not that I'm going to get too far ahead of myself. I still see the same thing I ever saw in Nava. A kid who can start for a week if needed, or come off the bench if you need an all purpose situational contact hitter. He's a better backup in that respect than DMac and always has been. But it's one thing for me to keep saying that, it's pretty danged nice to see him come up and show that ability.
  14. Station 13 definitely has a point. WHether it's wise to cherry-pick the stats the way he does is a question, but his argument still has some merit.
  15. So that Nava kid, not too bad eh?
  16. I'm not as worried about this as you are. That's not a lot of innings for one, and for two, the biggest challenge he had facing hitters as a starter was getting hitters out by contact -- and as evidenced by the fact that those starts were by and large effective for him even without the K ball, he's getting there. Especially because those 18.1 innings represent 3 starts (seriously, do the math). Bard's line so far averages about a quality start (30 innings over 5 start, ERA just came down below 4.5). He's basically a #3 starter pitching out of our 5 spot. For a guy who has never started successfully professionally before, that's not too freaking bad..
  17. So that's what you're measuring based on? Strikeouts? Have you even watched the games? Bard has been a lot more effective than his ERA lets on. He's been left out to dry three times already by V and it's burned him, inflating his numbers.
  18. That would have filled one of the 4 relief roles screaming for an effective stopgap, and left us in need of a starter -- something just as difficult and even more expensive to properly replace.
  19. I like it. Podsednik is a good player to add as a bit of bench depth in September. It's a nothing move in the big picture, but it can't hurt us, and Podsednik could help us if we can get enough of our other ducks in a row.
