    I have been a Red Sox fan for 48 years. In that time, they have finished last 3 times -- twice in the last 3 years and once in the Butch Hobson era in 1992*. There have also been very few sub-.500 seasons during that time prior to 2012. * Hobson's 1992 team won 73 more than the 2012 or 2014.

    In Yaz's book he discloses that he begged Zimmer to pitch Bill Lee. Zimmer was such a stubborn prick that he wouldn't even listen to Yaz.

    I read about the slights of Ted Williams when I was a kid in his book My Turn at Bat. That is probably when the aspect of being on a winning team entered into the voting consideration. I think the winning team consideration was a rationalization for the writers deliberate lighting of Williams. It had nothing to do with winning teams, but with the writers hatred for Williams.

    Pedro did to Zimmer what I wanted to do to him 25 years earlier when his stubborn stupidity or stupid stubbornness cost us the pennant in 1978.

    In 1967 when Yaz won the Triple Crown and carried the Red Sox from 9th place to the World Series for rthe first time in 21 years, he missed being a unanimous MVP, because 1 writer voted for Cesar Tovar. I think he voted for Tovar because he played every position in 1 game. If he had done that while chewing gum, he might have gotten more votes.

    It was thrilling to watch him pitch. He was in a class by himself. I grew uip watching Seaver pitch for the Mets and I saw Clemens great years with the Red Sox, but each game pitched by Pedro was an event that I eagerly anticipated. The town was buzzing on the days he pitched. I remember being in a restaurant on the day of a Yankee victory. I was with Yankee fans (ew). There were a couple of meter maids sitting near us. They told the Yankees fans that Pedro would get them tomorrow. Everyone in the town knew when he was pitching. I have never seen a pitcher capture the attention of a whole town like he did.

    Start printing the playoff tickets. Can this Boggs make himself disappear like Wade Boggs? I think he is a poor man's Bobby Jenks.

    2013 proved that anything can happen despite preseason prognostications. 2014 proved that Cherington is not a mastermind with a golden touch that had hit on a great formula for lasting success.

    True. The 2013 staff looked atrocious going into the season which is why they were picked by many to finish 4 the that year. But you would have to take Lester even at that juncture over anyone currently on the roster.

    I don't want to speak for iortiz, but I thought the purpose of this thread was to compare this year's rotation to the rotations of past seasons at the beginning of those seasons, not to compare the results. There hasn't been a staff that I can remember in recent years that didn't have a # 1 and 2 going into the season. Some years the staff blew up, but they looked better on paper going into the start of the season.

    but going into the season Lester, Beckett and Buchholz were legitimately considered to be a 1,2,3.

    At the end of the 2011 season, they couldn't find anyone to give us a good start. I thought iortiz was asking whether this was the worst staff going into a season. 2011 had a ton of injuries. That staff had Josh Beckett who put up 2.89 ERA and they had Lester too. They also had John Lackey. I'm not seeing that kind of quality going into 2015.

    We have a pair of 4's a pair of 5's and a 3. That is not going to scare anyone. Hitters will be licking their chops. The offense is going to have to bludgeon opposing teams to keep us in games. If the starters stay injury free and take all of their starts, the team could be competitive. If we get some injuries (i.e., Buch misses a lot of time), we could have a very rough road.

    You have a lot of knowledge and good ideas. If they don't line up with my view of things, that's alright. I like getting different view points. People can always learn from each other if they respect each other.
