    He's such an obnoxious punk. Please don't quote him if at all possible. He offers nothing worthwhile.

    Or maybe they just undervalued him or overvalued the players we did sign. Those too could be the reasons why we did not sign Shields. We can never know one way or another. The only valid and most provable of arguments is whether the Red Sox would have been better off with or without these players. The "why" we didn't sign him leads the argument down the path of unprovable, unknowable and unreliable excuses.

    I like the Yankee fantasy league strategy and have used it myself from time to time. LOL!! As far as always being negative to have the best of both worlds or to have the luxury of eventually being right, I can't speak for Fred, but before the 2011 season, I was very optimistic about the prospects of the Red Sox. I think Fred might have also been optimistic at that juncture. I was clearly on the optimistic side of the ledger going into that season. That is why pigeon-holing me as negative has no basis. As for Fred, believe it or not, but there have been other years where Fred has been very optimistic at the start of the season where I disagreed with him. Generally, we all tend to get more optimistic as the season approaches, because we want to look forward to good baseball.

    I never make up excuses for the FO, but others do. You are right that we do not know the reasons for Shields signing with SD, so others shouldn't use those unknowable reasons as a copout excuse when we evaluate our off season acquisitions in light of the fact that we did not get Shields or Lester or Shields.

    So, he is going to build a winner with all prospects and Lester -- is that the plan? There are ways to build a winner faster. It seems that he is indulging his wet dream of building a team from scratch with all home grown players drafted by him. That takes a long time at the expense of the fans enjoyment. I know what he is doing and it is taking a long time and it is yet to bear fruit. 2015 is a put up or shut up year for Theo. The prospects are ready and he has Lester. He has no more excuses. It's his time of reckoning.

    Taking 4 years to build a team that doesn't suck in a big market is not a great accomplishment.

    Finishing at .500 by year 3 would have shown some progress to the fans and the owners. If he can't start winning by the 4th season at the helm, that is not a good job IMO. He's building a baseball team not planning a mission to Mars. Sacrificing 4 years of competitive baseball under the banner of rebuilding would be ridiculous. You have to put out a product that is interesting at some point. Years and years of last place finishes disengages the fan base.

    I disagree. He will be much more productive than at least 3 of our 5 starters. He would have been a big upgrade.

    It's a nice ready-made excuse to store away for future use if Shields has a big season and our staff falls apart.

    I have not read anything about his off season training program. He clearly had a lot of work to do on his footwork in the field.

    There is no denying that he would have been a major improvement to our staff, for just a couple of million more than their ridiculous initial offer to Lester. Both in my opinion will have bug seasons.

    Keep hope alive for acquiring a starter. I would be shocked if we added an arm like Cueto. I expect that the Reds will try to extend him.

    The division is fairly week, so I think it could happen, but I am not expecting it.

    When the off season started, it was pretty much a uniform sentiment that we should obtain a #1 and 2. Then after acquiring a couple of mid to bottom of the rotation guys, everyone was hoping for a #1 or 2. As more time passed and Ben repeatededly said that he was comfortable with our rotation, people realized that there would be no big arm added. To me this is a disappointing outcome. Others have changed their position and have convinced themselves that Cherries did the right thing. Part of the rationalization to concur in this approach is to convince ourselves that we have in-season flexibility to improve the staff, if needed. I have no confidence that we will make any significant in season moves for the rotation.

    His contract is very reasonable IMO.

    I love when a poster makes the post about another poster rather than the topic at hand. I have no grudge against Theo. We won two championships on his watch, but I never thought that he was a great GM. He has been in Chicago for 3 full seasons finishing last twice and losing 101 games the other season. With the Cubs resources, IMO they should have given the fans a .500 team while rebuilding. I am a big believer in accountability. If they don't finish .500 with all of his hot young players and Lester, I think he is out of excuses after 4 seasons at the helm. I think that is plenty fair.
