  1. Pedro should never be discussed in the same thread with Mitchell Boggs.
  2. It was thrilling to watch him pitch. He was in a class by himself. I grew uip watching Seaver pitch for the Mets and I saw Clemens great years with the Red Sox, but each game pitched by Pedro was an event that I eagerly anticipated. The town was buzzing on the days he pitched. I remember being in a restaurant on the day of a Yankee victory. I was with Yankee fans (ew). There were a couple of meter maids sitting near us. They told the Yankees fans that Pedro would get them tomorrow. Everyone in the town knew when he was pitching. I have never seen a pitcher capture the attention of a whole town like he did.
  3. Start printing the playoff tickets. Can this Boggs make himself disappear like Wade Boggs? I think he is a poor man's Bobby Jenks.
  4. Good point. Power is becoming a rare commodity.
  5. 2013 proved that anything can happen despite preseason prognostications. 2014 proved that Cherington is not a mastermind with a golden touch that had hit on a great formula for lasting success.
  6. I forgot that Cruz left. They need some OF help.
  7. I agree. The O's could roll over the rest of the division.
  8. I guess that it is just a slow news day, and there isn't much to discuss.
  9. Demonize? Yes, they are all godless jackals! They must be stopped! I will start looking for wooden spikes etc. On eBay.
  10. True. The 2013 staff looked atrocious going into the season which is why they were picked by many to finish 4 the that year. But you would have to take Lester even at that juncture over anyone currently on the roster.
  11. I don't want to speak for iortiz, but I thought the purpose of this thread was to compare this year's rotation to the rotations of past seasons at the beginning of those seasons, not to compare the results. There hasn't been a staff that I can remember in recent years that didn't have a # 1 and 2 going into the season. Some years the staff blew up, but they looked better on paper going into the start of the season.
  12. but going into the season Lester, Beckett and Buchholz were legitimately considered to be a 1,2,3.
  13. At the end of the 2011 season, they couldn't find anyone to give us a good start. I thought iortiz was asking whether this was the worst staff going into a season. 2011 had a ton of injuries. That staff had Josh Beckett who put up 2.89 ERA and they had Lester too. They also had John Lackey. I'm not seeing that kind of quality going into 2015.
  14. We have a pair of 4's a pair of 5's and a 3. That is not going to scare anyone. Hitters will be licking their chops. The offense is going to have to bludgeon opposing teams to keep us in games. If the starters stay injury free and take all of their starts, the team could be competitive. If we get some injuries (i.e., Buch misses a lot of time), we could have a very rough road.
  15. You have a lot of knowledge and good ideas. If they don't line up with my view of things, that's alright. I like getting different view points. People can always learn from each other if they respect each other.
  16. is Carpenter going to be a bullpen arm?
  17. We all need to drop it, and use the ignore feature to eliminate the source of irritation.
  18. I have seen it much worse it in post-seasons gone by. The villain can't do anything to piss me off. I have him on ignore. The targets of his invective would be well advised to do the same.
  19. This is what happens after a slow baseball news week in a long off season after coming in last place. All in all, after the disaster of 2014, the acrimony here has been surprisingly mild.
  20. We can all use a break after last season. Happy New Year!
  21. He only disappears when his Pollyanna predictions blow up in his face. He doesn't stick around to take the beatings that he has coming to him even though he freely dishes it out when others are wrong. His excuse is that his life got busy. Of course that only happens when his predictions are crumbling. Lastly, it is no coincidence that this place is strife-free and the discourse is very civil when he goes into hiding. The lack of flame wars when he is gone is not a mere coincidence. The ignore feature works great for me. I urge others to use it.
  22. Fred knows a lot about the game. His coaching experience allows him to pickup on things that others without his experience do not pick up. If he thinks a guy is done or not up to a task, I take his opinion very seriously. He can be an emotional fan and when he spews his disfavor about a player or the manager he can use some funny expressions and nicknames. He doesn't hide behind a keyboard. He and I have had a few phone conversations about the Sox. Others may be surprised on this board that Fred and I don't agree about every player, but our conversations are always friendly and entertaining. You strike me as being made of the same stuff.
  23. you catch on real fast! You have a sharp mind and spunk.
  24. There really wasn't anything antagonistic about your post. You merely pointed out that you don't believe stats to be the be all and end all of player evaluation. Neither do I nor do the 30 mlb franchises as all use on the ground scouting to help evaluate players. User will take a hike if the team loses a few games early on.
