  1. If an East Division team lands Shields, that might throw off the parity.
  2. The bitching shouldn't bother you. You can tune that out. You will not be able to ignore that we will be rolling out a mediocre pitcher to start 4 out of every 5 games. That should bother you.
  3. They are good enough to compete for the division: If Buch stays healthy If Masterson stays healthy and gets back 4 mph on his fastball. If Miley doesn't give up a couple of dozen HRs and can get his ERA below 4, and If Kelly can be more than a 5 inning pitcher. When you have this many "ifs," a few of them will not turn out well. When 2 or more don't happen, things tend to go south. So, I disagree that this rotation is good enough on paper to compete. They can compete "if" 4 of them can turn around last year's performances. When I start hearing, if, if, if, if, I think that means trouble.
  4. He might pitch below hois career norms at Yankee Stadium, but I am pretty sure that he would be an improvement over ther #4 and #5 guys thus improving their rotation. If the Yankees overpay for him, that is no comfort to me if he makes the Yankees better.
  5. Time will tell. On paper, it is not a very good rotation. Credit or blame should be reserved until we see how they perform.
  6. Fred, I think I would do it if that is all he wants. I have little faith in our prospects after what I witnessed in the last couple of years. I respect your player evaluations, which is the only reason that I am not gungho for this trade. Have you seen him play?
  7. He has no leverage at this point. Pitchers and catchers are reporting in less than 2 weeks. He can probably be had at a reasonable price and length of years. I can't stand this " young controllable arms" idea. Our young controllable arms from last year -- Webster, De La Rosa, and Renaudo have all been jettisoned. I really don't expect the group coming behind them is much better. Porcello is a 1 year deal. So is Masterson. Buch's contract is up this season too
  8. Narrative? Are you employed by MSNBC? I for one am looking forward. This staff is not formidable at all and it could be very meh. Lester pitches for the Cubs. Whether they wanted him back or not is irrelevant, but it would have been a much stronger staff with him.
  9. Whether they intended to not resign Lester or they just botched and misread the situation, their current staff is collection of mediocrity, underachievers, and hopeful comebacks. They will need a lot to go right for this staff to be productive. Whether you ascribe incompetence to their negotiations with Lester or are convinced that his leaving was an execution of their plan, the staff is very questionable and it could turn into a s*** sandwich. The only saving grace is that no AL east team has a strong staff. The O's are mediocre but with more depth. The Yankees is potentially very strong depending on the health of CC, Tanaka and Pineda. Injuries like last year could devastate them. If the Blue Jays land Shields and Soriano to close, they could cause some problems for us. Their lineup is as deep as ours.
  10. I won't speak for others, but other regular posters who bring knowledge and who contribute positively to the discourse have had problems with him.
  11. Did you read UN s post about me. I don't even read that prick's posts and he is blaming me for this thread? Come on, the guy is a cancer. I will reiterate. There were almost no dustups while he was gone. Now, it is a common occurrence. Do the math.
  12. You would be right in calling me biased in favor of iortis. That would not be stupid, nor is it stupid or unfair for me to observe that you favor UN. I don't see UN's cheap shots unless someone quotes them. MVP has been directing less cheap shots my way for some time now --that has not been a problem for me lately. So, I don't know what salt I am rubbing into what wounds. Finally, I am not going to take cheap shots from anyone... ever without responding. I was not a participant in this skidmish. It was childish, and it needs to be stopped. That is the extent of my involvement.
  13. YOTN is on. It is in his hands now.
  14. It takes 2 to tango, and in this case, three people are dancing. You think it is iortiz, because UN is a friend of yours. I see that this site was almost entirely peaceful until "the juggernaut" returned from hiatus. That's just a fact. Now, we are having this crap on a weekly basis, and there is one common participant to all of the skirmishes.
  15. And let UN handle himself. I have him on ignore to avoid this crap. Please, don't help spread his crap.
  16. Not the same thing. You are acting like a moron in this thread. You excoriated me for stepping in to defend iortiz not too long ago. You raged on about him being able to defend himself. But here you are being the cowardly third man in defending the big fat juggernaut, i.e. UN. Can't he defend himself? Calm down. Read your posts tomorrow and hopefully you will realize what a jackass you are making of yourself.
  17. "Sucking and cleaning ass" is homophobic? Hmmm. I don't get that. Crude? Yes, but homophobic? I know gay people that express themselves in graphic, crude sexual terms.
  18. I am gone from the site for a couple of days and there is a childish flame war. Is anyone surprised who is in the middle of it. The same misanthrope who has been in the middle of all of these things. Of course his wingman takes up his cause to fan the flames. But everyone else is the problem...right. The adults seem to be content to discuss baseball.
  19. Hello you bitter children who hate adults. I had a ton of fun enjoying the Super Bowl at the Borgata casino. Such an exciting game. The patriots were already my second favorite team for losing two Super Bowls to my Giants. Well, that last second interception put the Patriots close to being neck and neck with my Giants as my favorite, because 8 for the Pats and 4 for Seattle gave me the winning box in a $100 box pool. Sweet. You may say that I am part of FOM if it makes your miserable lives feel worthwhile. I am going to collect my winnings tomorrow and put them away for my upcoming Spring Training trip -- my 13 consecutive Spring Training. I am smiling from ear to ear. But yet as happy as I am and as much as I love my Red Sox, my observation is that our rotation is very mediocre at best. It is thin, without depth and not at all flexible. Maybe it is " projectible" whatever that means. Sounds like a fancy word that means nothing in this context.
  20. True. They have had better luck with relievers. Let's hope they don't use Ogando to start.
  21. I can think of years where we had a small shopping cart of these damaged injury rebounding pitchers -- John Smoltz, Brad Penny, Aaron Cook, and Vinny Padilla among others. I can't remember any instances of these dumpster dives working out. The harm that occurs is when these broken piles of junk take the mound and ruin games.
  22. People keep saying that they can assess their pitching needs after the season starts. I just don't see that as a realistic option. The last time the Red Sox added a significant starter during a season was ss MVP mentioned, Mike Boddicker around 25 years ago. It's just not that easy to add top pitching during the season.
  23. Lottery Tickets are cheap because they are incredible long shots,
  24. There is nothing flexible about our rotation. We have 5 starters, none of which is an aces and none which projects to be an ace. As has been pointed out by other posters, there is little pitching depth that can be turned to in our minors to step in if the oft-injured Buch and injured Masterson go down. That depth which had been Ruby, Webster and Renaudo are all gone. I don't understand the confidence that we will be able to add to the staff in-season. Our track record over many seasons proves that it is not easy to improve your staff in-season. As for the "more projectible" comment, I don't even know what that means and how this staff would be "more projectible" than a staff with a big horse pulling our wagon.
  25. I agree, but a team with a payroll over the luxury cap should have a pitching rotation that is more than a crap shoot.
