  1. At the cost of winning.
  2. Agreed. I have little doubt that he can pitch well in Boston. The only question is whether he would want to put up with the crap.
  3. If he hits 30 bombs and knocks in 100 runs again, I would be surprised if he hangs it up.
  4. I am not a mental health professional, but based on my lay experience, anxiety disorders and depression can often be overcome and successfully managed. It is often not a chronic situation as is schizophrenia. Greinke has not had a recurrent episode in many years and he has pitched in All Star games and playoffs that carry lots of pressure. Boston shouldn't be a problem even if there are some dickwads in the stands shouting disgusting stuff. I just don't understand those so-called fans. Yell at the umps and occasionally the manager who has been sleeping on the bench, but not the players. I like Greinke better than Price, but he probably should never listen to Red Sox talk radio stations. No player should listen to that crap.
  5. His history with DD will play to our advantage.
  6. What would be your plan for Red Sox pitching?
  7. I would be onboard with any of those trades you proposed.
  8. He was never cost controlled and cheap. He came with a big price tag. He is completely different than Sale or Sonny Gray who are cheap young and under control.
  9. I i did not say that they would be drastically devalued because their MLB future with the Red Sox was a long shot due to being blocked, but yes I do think in a negotiation it lessens your leverage.
  10. I don't think there is much, if any, chance of the Red Sox signing Davis, but I don't think he will be an albatross. He has hit 159 HRs over the last 4 seasons. He is a big impact power hitter who would replace Ortiz's power when he hangs it up after the next year or so.
  11. Here is my wish list for the remainder of the offseason. 1. Pick up one FA starter: Price/ Greinke/ Cuieto in that order of preference 2. Trade Sandoval for James Shields swapping bad contracts and allowing Hanley to play 3B 3. Pick up Chris Davis to play 1B
  12. The Red Sox want to trade for a cost controlled cheap young ace. Hamels comes with a big price tag. Plus he is 31. What young cost-controlled ace has gone so cheaply that it wouldn't cost a young star? You are not going to get one of them for Margot and Guerra and a couple of "effective" major leaguers. Give some examples where there type of trade has happened where the ace wasn't either a salary dump, over age 30, or in his walk year.
  13. imo, DD's thinking probably wasn't much different than your thoughts on this trade. The tipping point was probably that these guys were completely blocked in our organization. They had NO path to the majors with the Red Sox, and that does lessen their trade value somewhat. Other teams know where your depth is and they know that those players had no value to the Red Sox as future major leaguers. As with most other trades, we will just have to see how this one plays out. In the meantime, our pen just got much better and I am looking forward to watching Kimbrel pitch.
  14. Oh, now I understand why losing Margot and Guerra was so critical. All hope of landing a number 1 starter via trade is now lost.
  15. What additional pieces do you think would have netted us Sale or Gray?
  16. That's right. We are not going to get a number 1 starter for Swihart, Owens, Marrero and Cecchini.
  17. I think we all agree that no one likes to pay retail prices or to overpay, but some here seem very distressed over this one transaction. There will me more moves. We are several moves away from being competitive.
  18. A $184 million payroll for a last place roster is spending money like a stupid drunken sailor imo. Spending like a drunken sailor would be an improvement.
  19. Maybe McCarthy's value for a 1 year deal would have been $16 million. I am still not getting that Buch is a huge bargain at $13 million.
  20. I am not surprised, and he is probably a decent comp, but does it mean that we saved a whopping $1 million in 2016 by picking up Buch's option? That is not such a value contract imo that it would enhance his trade value. If we trade him, imo we will end up eating part of his salary.
  21. You aren't upset that DD is breaking up Ben's Red Sox?
  22. This is just silly, because if you look at the guys that he will be replacing (not Koji or Tazawa) probably had a negative WAR. He is a far bigger improvement than you give him credit for. Your point doesn't stand. Frankly, it is an example of how statistics can be used to distort reality.
  23. Plus, when we have tried this approach, we have not done very well with it.
  24. It would have been interesting to see what Buch would have commanded on the open market. I would not have been surprised that despite Fangraphs that he would not command $13 million per year. He is a half season pitcher.
