    DD got an All Star pitcher with 2 1/2 years of control before July 15th. Not bad. Let's hope that our scouts got it right. Maybe there will be more to come. There is room for Hill.

    5:05pm: Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports (via Twitter) that top right-handed pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza is headed to the Padres in the deal. ESPN’s Keith Law rated Espinoza as the No. 14 prospect in all of baseball on his just-updated Top 50 prospects list (ESPN Insider required/recommended).

    Per MLB Trade Rumors: The Padres have agreed to a trade that will send left-hander Drew Pomeranz to the Red Sox, reports Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribue. Lin notes that the return is not yet clear but one of Boston’s better prospects is believed to be in the deal. Lin doesn’t mention his name specifically, but it’s worth noting that several people have noted on Twitter that lefty Henry Owens was scratched from his start in Triple-A tonight. The Padres acquired Pomeranz from the A’s this winter for the now-bargain price of Yonder Alonso and Marc Rzepczynski, and after talking his way into a rotation tryout in Spring Training, Pomeranz has broken out as the ace of the San Diego staff and fulfilled a good deal of the potential that pundits believed him to possess when he was selected fifth overall by the Guardians back in 2010. In 102 innings this season, the first-time All-Star has posted a 2.47 ERA with 10.1 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and a 47.8 percent ground-ball rate. He’ll immediately slot into the middle of the Boston rotation and can be controlled for another two seasons beyond the 2016 camp

    I agree that the cost for pitching isn't as high in the off season, and it is for this reason that I agree that DD should have acquired another pitcher before the start of the season. Either way, it will have a substantial cost.

    if our scouts think that his recent results are a fluke, we will probably not pursue him. It is determinations like this that make quality scouting so important. Stat sheets will not help us in this case.

    If we don't get pitching from outside the organization, this team will not get better in the second half and next season and into the future. How do you want to build the team pitching in the next couple of years where the cost will be acceptable to you?

    I have seen firsthand what it takes to succeed in a business that has products that people don't want to buy. Baseball is a product that sells itself. All of the teams make very good money, whether they are good or bad. That is my point. I was talking about the profit aspect of the business.

    And this is where the FO needs to earn their bloated salaries. They need to get good scouts on the ground to watch him pitch. They had better be checking videos of all his games and do whatever homework they need to do to determine if he is for real. The numbers are not going to give you that answer.

    The GM gets paid to know who is available.

    Definitely, he would not be a half year rental. He would be a 2 1/2 year acquisition and we need pitching. He will cost a lot more than Hill, but I wouldn't view it as sacrificing the future. Our system doesn't have a lot of pitching talent and we have an ample supply of hitters. Swapping some hitters for 2 1/2 years of a solid pitcher is not sacrificing the future. To me that would be a move to build for the future.

    Correct. The Marlins are not going to move one of their marquee players at this point. They will make a run at the playoffs and try to inject some enthusiasm to build a fanbase in Miami.

    We will have to see what they get. This is all just negotiating posturing that they are doing.

    I agree. I really don't care whether he signs or not, because he will not be coming to Fenway for 5 years under the best of circumstances. I will shake my head that the momos in the FO wasted a high first round pick if they don't get it done. Maybe they can retain one of those Dominican Agents who has a bag of untraceable cash to help them get it done.

    I am and was glad that we got him. We are discussing the negotiating acumen of our FO who I claimed would lose a negotiation if they negotiated with themselves.

    Lucchino admitted that there were no income stream from Japan created as a result of signing Dice K. Also, just form a negotiation standpoint and gauging the market, they overshot the closest bid by $16 or 18 million with their bid of $52 million.
