    My recollection of Kaline was in the mid-1960's. By that that time, he was already in his prime.

    When I watch a player, it doesn't conjure up memories of another player's stat line. It may remind me of the way another player played the game, but not their stat lines. In addition to the huge differences in stature, Vlad was a bad ball hitter. He would hit Home Runs off the pitches that were inches off the ground or head high. That is not Betts. I can see the Clemente comparison, but not Vlad.

    Putting the players in the best circumstances to succeed helps them perform -- that takes into in game tactics. For instance, it was a very bad in game tactic to pinch run Wright. That had a very low percentage for success and was not worth the risk.

    I don't think our FO is necessarily any worse than any other FO. I have been on record about my lack of regard for the business acumen of baseball executives in general.

    Good comparison. Clemente also had a slight but wiry build. Betts has shown a really improved arm lately, but Clemente had a canon. Betts has better HR power. But yes I can see the comparison.

    I am really surprised that he was a second base man in Cuba. He must have been blocked at SS and 3B.

    Yes, Pablo and Rusney are probably the best examples of really stupid overspending. Rusney is still the highest priced Cuban defector acquisition. We are getting 0 for $72 million, and Pablo was cheap by the pound I guess. I don't have any problem with getting Moncado. It is quite the opposite. I am thrilled to have him. I am just not going to heap adulation on the FO for it's shrewdness when they make as many terrible big deals as they make great ones.

    You just have to shake your head. Sometimes they can be so rigidly and unreasonably cheap and other times they spend like drunken sailors like with Price and Carl Crawford.

    After seeing his arm last night, I had to wonder why is was a second baseman. That is not a second baseman's arm. It is a SS/RF/3B arm.

    Beane is another one of those guys who is impressed with his own press clippings and he has won diddly squat.

    But we overbid the Yankees by 20%, and the other offer might have been $26 million. I realize that this is pennies to the Red Sox. My main point is that they were willing to spend $60+ million on this kid, but offered Lester ony $70 million. That just strikes me as stupid.

    I am thrilled to have the kid, and I don't care how much money they spent on him, but throwing kudos at a FO for business acumen for throwing money around and overpaying is another issue. If that is the standard, then the Yankee FO up until a couple of years ago must have been the smartest FO of all time.

    I have never understood your fondness of Eric Wedge. Was he a drinking buddy? Does he come from your neighborhood? What is the back story, because I see no reason not to lump him in with the rest of the knuckleheads?

    Very few pitchers completely transform themselves after 1,400 innings. That is a load of innings. Most guys don't have careers that are that long. Whatever is going on in 2016, I am really enjoying it, and it is very unexpected after the shitshow that he put on in 2015.
