  1. No squander this time. 4-0!!
  2. I was getting excited early in the week when you were trailing.
  3. At the game mojo is always a good thing. Hopefully, some of that mojo will rub off on your dad.
  4. I am not the one to bring up the analogy, which is not a good one at all. I don't dispute your premise at all, but the Mays case is not analogous. Just clarifying the history.
  5. But he hasn't played against MLB talent to the same degree as Mays had. Also, the situation with Mays was different. He did nt come up during a stretch drive but rather at the beginning of the season.
  6. I think Satchel was not just referring to the Negro League players, but he played against many of the white stars when he was in his prime as they barnstormed during the offseason. The white stars played the black stars in the offseason as the played in towns that didn't have MLB teams during the offseason.
  7. I agree. We will not see Owens or Johnson as starters this season unless there is a catastrophe in the next week or 10 days.
  8. Willie Mays had already been a star in the Negro Leagues. It wasn't like he was an unknown prospect.
  9. The regular season has concluded and MVP and Thunder were the division champions. Thunder squeaked out the division Championship by 1/2 game over 700 and Iortiz. I had my shot at him last week and I could only manage a tie. MVP dominated his division and the league. I can't remember any team going wire to wire without any faltering. He only lost one game. Our format has changed over time. We used to measure standings based on categories and not a single win/loss each week. In our current format, I can't remember anyone matching MVPs regular season. Well done. Thunder, I am pretty sure that I have your address somewhere. Is a check okay? MVP, send me a PM with an email address to use for PayPal. Good luck to in the playoffs!
  10. I felt this way before yesterday's game, and this is how I feel after yesterday's game.
  11. Last playoff spot? My aspirations are higher.
  12. I have always liked the guy even though he is a doofus.
  13. I always liked the guy.
  14. I have always thought very highly of JF.
  15. Just learn to trust my Spring Training assessments on these things. Last year, I predicted that he had no clue in the OF, and this year Imy concerns were popips and throwing. He has had a few problems with popups, but not too many and he sucks at throwing. Overall, he has been adequate.
  16. Porcello will be high in the final voting. Unless he falls apart, he is in the top 3.
  17. His issue is he is frail. Does the head play a part in that? Who knows. I am not a doctor, so I don't know his physical issue. I just know that he has a track record of not being durable.
  18. I am not all that sure about Pom either. After some more thought, here is how I would go into the playoffs. 1. Price 2. Porcello 3. Pomeranz/ Buch in a piggyback 4. ERod/Buch in a piggyback If Buch is needed to piggyback Pom, he will obviously not be available to piggyback ERod. If Pom can go deep into the game, Buch can piggyback ERod.
  19. I think Porcello is a top Cy candidate this season. If he has had a weakness, it has been the gopher ball. If he limits the Jays to 2 or less Homers tonight, I am confident about our chances -- provided neither is a 3 run job or GS.
  20. Rotation for the playoffs should be: 1. Price 2. Porcello 3. Pomeranz 4. ERod/Buch in a piggyback
  21. If Porcello keeps the Jays from going deep more than twice, the Sox should win.
  22. He's only valuable depth if he is healthy. Most seasons at this time he is rehabbing for the next season. We have been lucky that he sucked so much in the first half that he didn't pitch his quota of innings needed to get injured.
  23. It isnt a strawman. It is just valuing players as a source over some stats that can be mangled and manipulated. There are times when one athlete knows that he is mentally dominating his opponent and that the other guy has no chance. The stats say that he should have a 35% chance of getting on base according to all career stats and relevant splits. Yet, both participants know that the guy is toast. And even at the major league level, confidence and will are not equal among all players, and good and great players don't necessarily have a proportionately great confidence level. It is the reason why some players can't handle playing in big markets. It isn't because of the commute or the high rents. It is that players (even at the MLB) level react differently to stress and pressure.
  24. I know that we can afford it. That is not the issue. The issue would be allocating a starting rotation spot to a guy who we know will only give us half a season. I would rather go in a different direction and get someone who can give us 30 starts.
