    First, Altuve is not a slow footed catcher or lumbering first baseman. We routinely sent those guys home to be thrown out at by 15 feet. Altuve is one of the fastest guys on the team. An excellent baseruner. Next, the pitcher on the mound throws 103 mph gas and is a big strikeout pitcher, so the odds are high that the next batter can't put the ball in play. Third, he took the risk to get the walk off win. If he failed, the game would still be tied with the winning run in scoring position. Fourth, Altuve looked back and saw that Judge had missed the cutoff man and that his throw was heading toward second base. It was very different from the stupidity that we witnessed game in and game out.

    The Yankees should take the next game as CC has been coming up big, unless the Astros lineup breaks out.

    I would be all for that, but do you think a pitcher with a chronically bad knee and Chavis can get us atop bat?

    Don't whine. Your team got outplayed. Astros made some tough plays on defense and Gardner pulled a rock getting thrown out at third for the third out. Judge missed the cutoff on the final play and Sanchez was too busy trying to block the plate with his foot when he had plenty of time to come out to meet that throw and go back for the tag.

    No, it isn't. He had the right to the base and he didn't alter the throw as he ducked.

    I was surprised that you said this, because Verlander has been in one of the best stretches of his career. Not only is he not giving up runs, but he is going deep into games and putting up wins everytime out.

    Otani is getting ankle surgery. I would be reluctant to sign him. But Stanton interests me very much.

    It was a terrible misstep by Pedroia when he did that. It could not have sat well with the rest of the team or with the coaches or manager.

    I have a feeling that one of these two teams is going to erupt offensively tomorrow. I hope that it will be the Astros.

    I didn't blame Farrell. But I didn't apologize for his managing throughout the year either.

    We can dither about which stats are most relevant, but other than the injuries to Pedroia and Hanley which significantly impaired their performances (and it was predictable as they have had chronic problems), the other performances were not uniformly and drastically down. This type of performance was not totally unforeseeable for an offense without David Ortiz. Instead, there seems to have been an expectation that the remaining group would elevate their performances. To me that is not reasonable.

    Which Tanaka will you get? On Jeter Day, the Astros torched Tanaka for 3 or 4 HRs and 8 runs in 2 innings.

    Down years are not uncommon early in a player's career after having success. There is no smooth career trajectory. It is a game of adjustments. You have some success and the league adjusts to you, then you decline and have to make adjustments. Early in a career, these adjustments don't happen very quickly.
