    ”Martinez might have helped some”? So it is mere coincidence that Papi leaves and Betts performance falls off. Yes, I know about the wrist injury. A Papi like stud gets signed and Benny starts playing like an all star and that only helped some? I disagree.

    That was his fault. He should have eaten that ball after the bobble. He killed ERod, no ifs, buts or what’s.

    Dumpster dives are a shot in the dark. If you start doing milultiple dumpster dives, the cost adds up. It is better to do a straight out acquisition. Shields is pitching very well this season. He has greatly reduced the Home Run ball. The rate at which he has reduced the Home Run ball indicates that more than randomness is at work.

    I posted a couple of days ago about James Shields. I have been following James Shields’ season. He is with a pathetic team that is horrible defensively and they play in a bandbox. He has put up a high number of quality starts, but the really notable thing about his season thus far is that he has avoided what has been his downfall throughout his career — the Home Run ball. I would think that he should be an inexpensive acquisition. If Pom and Wright continue to falter Shields would be a good alternative.

    i don’t blame Swihart. I blame Management that has engaged in contortions to retain this very mediocre talent. It has hurt the roster as with today’s short benches, you can’t afford to keep a guy without a role. He didn’t look bad behind the plate in his last start, and I hope that continues to hold true when the opposition starts to force him to make throws and other plays.

    Swihart has gone from not having a role on this team to being a menace -- getting doubled off first base like an amateur after the LFer decoyed him and killing one of our starting pitchers with his inadequacy playing first base.

    The point being discussed was whether or not it was an acceptable progression for a big market team to go through an abysmal period like the Red Sox did with the last place finishes. I don't think it is.

    Blake has still not done anything to earn his roster spot. Athleticism isn't enough. You have to produce.

    Lin's play was debatable, and it was debated here. Swihart's play was inexcusable. This guy has to start bringing something to the table soon besides his athleticism to keep his roster spot. It is more than halfway through the season and he has done nothing to earn his roster spot except to be out of options.

    We need 3 innings of bums to get to Kimbrel, or 2 innings of bums, 1 of Barnes and then Kimbrel.

    They are in love with this guy and are stubbornly holding onto him when he has no role. He didn't look bad behind the plate in his last game, but the jury is still out. We will see what happens when teams make him throw the ball.
