    When Kaz has his slider working, he is damn near impossible for righties to hit. It dives down and in at the hitter's kneecaps.

    Building for the future is nice, but the future is so uncertain. Grab for the ring that is within reach now. Once the Championship banner goes up, it's there forever. The future can become the present and then the past very quickly with nothing to show for it.

    We've got plenty of hitting, but he would not be a bad lefty backup at first. I would be happy to finally say goodbye to Willie Harris POS.

    Lester is going to have to get more efficient and go deeper into games. Expecting 4 innings from the pen each time out is too much. Right now he is the #4 starter. The #5 slot is a disaster and they use a lot of pen on those days. IMO they need to pick up someone who can fill the 3 slot pushing Lester to the #5.

    Hopefully, Lester will settle down and throw strikes more consistently, so he can go past the 5th inning.

    5.25 ERA for Johnson on July 1st---not a good sign for the Yankees. I think the predictions of a big 2nd half will not come to fruition. I think that when he returns to pitching to AL East teams it's more likely that his performance will deteriorate.

    If the Detroit FO is smart, they would realize that Smoltz probably doesn't put them over the top as a favorite to win the WS. That alone might convince them not to part with too much young talent. The Tiger FO has not shown a tendency towards a win-it-now mentality. For them to part with a boat-load of young talent would be more contrary to their management philosophy than it would be for the Boston FO.

    Hate might be a little strong. Afterall, he is just a marginal major leaguer who will disappear from the majors in a few seasons. If I were you I would hate that the Yankees' FO seems to have a high opinion of this bush leaguer.

    If no other team wants top part with that caliber of prospect for Smoltz, the Sox might be able to get him for less. Also, don't forget that the Braves would probably like to free themselves from Smoltz's contract. They could put that $ to use in their rebuilding process. The fact is that none of us has any idea what other teams would be willing to trade for Smoltz. Assuming the other teams are not being run by complete *******s, the Sox should be able and willing to bid competitively.

    Agreed, but the answer is not Josh Johnson. I believe the answer is a move to bring in an impact pitcher like Smoltz.

    Well, if you want to be lazy about it, you shouldn't make accusations. I challenge anyone on these boards to research my threads to find posts bashing Schilling, Loretta, Lowell or even Foulke. I only bash the guys I noted earlier. Schilling is God. I've always liked Loretta although he has below average speed and range, and I love Lowell, whose only shortcoming is a lack of speed. You should either back up your accusation or retract. That would be the big thing to do.

    You can't blame the guy. He is a premier showman in addition to being a world class athlete, and for someone that loves baseball as much as Pedro, he truly appreciated how Red Sox Nation is so baseball absorbed and obsessed. I have lived most of my life in NY around Yankee and Mets fans, and NY does not come within 100 miles of Red Sox Nation in that regard.

    You got me mixed up with some other ranter. My friends kid me all the time because I refer to Schilling as "God." I was even optimistic about Foulke. In my prior post, I told you the guys that I hammer. The only one that I might add to that list would be Wake. I like Wake, but I find it nerve-wracking to watch him pitch, and I am usually guilty of wanting to pull him at the first sign of trouble. I am still expecting your retraction.

    Scurholtz should know that the smart move is to get value for the 39 year old pitcher now, because Smoltz will be over 40 by the time the Braves are ready to contend again. In the meantime, Smoltz could blow out an elbow. It's not like Smoltz puts fannies in the seats. The smart move is to move him, because 39 year old pitchers don't fit with rebuilding. Of course, he will try to get max value for him, that's his job, and he will get what the market will bear. Once Shuerholtz decides that he needs to move Smoltz, he will go. He may have already made that decision, but he won't tip his hand as that would negatively impact his value.

    Search to your hearts content. You'll find nothing but praise about Loretta, Schilling, and Lowell. Then you can eat your words. I am glad my posts drive you crazy. I want to stir the passions and get the baseball discussion lively. I have regularly slammed the following guys on this board: Seanez ( I slammed him from the day he signed) Tavarez (I am not the only one who calls him POS) and Willie Harris (does anyone disagree?). I have also slammed Francoma who has managed like an idiot this year. I've been hard on David Pauley, who is not ML ready and the FO for it's bargain basement acquisitions of Kyle (whathisname from KC) and Jason Johnson. Other than my opinion of Lester, I don't think the majority of posters disagree with these other assesments. I can hardly wait for the results of your research.

    He is arguable the best pitcher in the last 40 years. He was not injured when he ended his walk year. He retired the last 14 batters he faced in a WS game. He was and is a legend. He should have been embraced by the FO for the remainder of his career. The FO outsmarted itself by making some bet on his health.

    Yikes! Your memory is faulty. SeaBeachFred would call it a senior moment, but you are too young for that. Y ou can search all the threads on this board and you will find nothing from me criticising Loretta (who I have liked since he was in the NL and he was hitting around .500 during ST when I was in FT. Myers), or Schilling (who has a lifetime pass from me if he never threw another pitch after 2004, plus I liked his velocity and mobility in ST-- I even defended him for hitting that Pirate in the head), Lowell (who I thought everyone was burying way too quick-- I didn't think his bat was slow. I thought his problem was recognizing the off-speed stuff which he was jumping at). The only guy I questioned as a contributor in "0g6 was Lester. After you research the threads, I'll accept your admission of error. In other words, you can "eat your words".

    I said at least one or two more years, although I did admit that he would probably be up for a cup of coffee this year. Right now, he is still at the cup of coffee stage, and two wins is not yet a significant contribution. However, my opinion has changed, and it is not based on his stuff (which looks Plus) or his command (which comes and goes -- he needs to refine that). I have changed my opinion based on the pair of balls that he has shoed, particularly in the AB vs. David Wright. Good nerves and big balls will accelerate his development.
