  1. You can't blame the guy. He is a premier showman in addition to being a world class athlete, and for someone that loves baseball as much as Pedro, he truly appreciated how Red Sox Nation is so baseball absorbed and obsessed. I have lived most of my life in NY around Yankee and Mets fans, and NY does not come within 100 miles of Red Sox Nation in that regard.
  2. You got me mixed up with some other ranter. My friends kid me all the time because I refer to Schilling as "God." I was even optimistic about Foulke. In my prior post, I told you the guys that I hammer. The only one that I might add to that list would be Wake. I like Wake, but I find it nerve-wracking to watch him pitch, and I am usually guilty of wanting to pull him at the first sign of trouble. I am still expecting your retraction.
  3. Scurholtz should know that the smart move is to get value for the 39 year old pitcher now, because Smoltz will be over 40 by the time the Braves are ready to contend again. In the meantime, Smoltz could blow out an elbow. It's not like Smoltz puts fannies in the seats. The smart move is to move him, because 39 year old pitchers don't fit with rebuilding. Of course, he will try to get max value for him, that's his job, and he will get what the market will bear. Once Shuerholtz decides that he needs to move Smoltz, he will go. He may have already made that decision, but he won't tip his hand as that would negatively impact his value.
  4. Search to your hearts content. You'll find nothing but praise about Loretta, Schilling, and Lowell. Then you can eat your words. I am glad my posts drive you crazy. I want to stir the passions and get the baseball discussion lively. I have regularly slammed the following guys on this board: Seanez ( I slammed him from the day he signed) Tavarez (I am not the only one who calls him POS) and Willie Harris (does anyone disagree?). I have also slammed Francoma who has managed like an idiot this year. I've been hard on David Pauley, who is not ML ready and the FO for it's bargain basement acquisitions of Kyle (whathisname from KC) and Jason Johnson. Other than my opinion of Lester, I don't think the majority of posters disagree with these other assesments. I can hardly wait for the results of your research.
  5. He is arguable the best pitcher in the last 40 years. He was not injured when he ended his walk year. He retired the last 14 batters he faced in a WS game. He was and is a legend. He should have been embraced by the FO for the remainder of his career. The FO outsmarted itself by making some bet on his health.
  6. I think the Sox put the Mets into a bit of a tailspin.
  7. Yikes! Your memory is faulty. SeaBeachFred would call it a senior moment, but you are too young for that. Y ou can search all the threads on this board and you will find nothing from me criticising Loretta (who I have liked since he was in the NL and he was hitting around .500 during ST when I was in FT. Myers), or Schilling (who has a lifetime pass from me if he never threw another pitch after 2004, plus I liked his velocity and mobility in ST-- I even defended him for hitting that Pirate in the head), Lowell (who I thought everyone was burying way too quick-- I didn't think his bat was slow. I thought his problem was recognizing the off-speed stuff which he was jumping at). The only guy I questioned as a contributor in "0g6 was Lester. After you research the threads, I'll accept your admission of error. In other words, you can "eat your words".
  8. I said at least one or two more years, although I did admit that he would probably be up for a cup of coffee this year. Right now, he is still at the cup of coffee stage, and two wins is not yet a significant contribution. However, my opinion has changed, and it is not based on his stuff (which looks Plus) or his command (which comes and goes -- he needs to refine that). I have changed my opinion based on the pair of balls that he has shoed, particularly in the AB vs. David Wright. Good nerves and big balls will accelerate his development.
  9. I think the FO should encourage him to sit. He gets his incentive $ for being named to the team. As far as an extension goes, the FO would be stark raving mad if they don't keep the tandem of Ortiz and Manny going as long as possible. It is simply the best 3-4 combo that the game has seen since Ruth and Gehrig. It is a wrecking crew that destroys pitching, blows open games and carries the team offense for most of the 162 game schedule. If Manny goes, Ortiz never sees a strike again. It would be a much, much, much, much (did I say much?) dumber move than letting Pedro walk.
  10. I heard that he is in Florida training at SeaWorld.
  11. I did think Lester would contribute in a meaningful way in '06. He's in the process of proving me wrong.
  12. Let's not forget that the team did set the record for consecutive errorless games.
  13. He would also have starts against KC. He would eat up free swinging teams like Detroit. He usually owned Tampa. The '04 September starts were aberration. He was probably a bit worn down. He'd do pretty well against the A's and Twins as well. Four or five starts against the O's would give him about 4 or 5 wins. You ask when he last dominated the Yankees. This could have been the year with their weakened lineup. He was always competitive with the Yanks, and I can't remember them dominating him. I don't see Pedro giving up dingers at the pace that Schilling and Beckett are giving them up. He is still a top pitcher. The hitters in either league will confirm that for you.
  14. Despite one of his worst career starts against the hottest team and offense in baseball, his interleague stats in 3 starts are: 17 inn 9 ER 19 Hits 14 K's 4.76 ERA Terrible for Pedro, but not that terrible for most AL pitchers, plus these stats are skewed by an emotional start against an offensive juggernaut. He clearly was not prepared to pitch last night. Last year in 4 interleague starts, including 2 starts against the Yankees and one against the Angels his stats were: 28 inn 25 hits 10 runs 8 BB 19 K's 3.21 ERA I'd say that's pretty good. How good would these stats have been if he had faced the AL Central. Even the limited appearances to AL teams since he left the AL don't support your theory. I'd be happy to have him on the mound to start any big game.
  15. You don't know if the price is ridiculous until you begin the pursuit by making an inquiry. Even if their opening price is high, a skilled negotiator might be able to reduce the cost to a reasonable level. I don't see why the Braves would want to keep a 39 year old pitcher when they will clearly be in rebuilding mode this next off-season.
  16. It would be a mistake not to pursue Smoltz.
  17. It was a huge mistake to let him walk.
  18. They'll keep him on rehab assignment as long as possible, but then he will be back on the ML roster. In August, he will be valuable to spell Nixon and Ramirez.
  19. Has a team done that before--- shut down a college player for the remainder of the year to rest? I thought they normally go to an instructional league.
  20. Good, we agree to agree. I thought we were more in agreement than disagreement all along. We were just saying the same things a bit different. I hate to agree to disagree. It's very unsatisfying.
  21. I did agree with you. You suggested that I would have traded Marte and Lester for Willis. I agreed that I would have done that. Do you agree that a staff of Schilling, Pedro, Beckett and Willis would be unstoppable? It's hard to conclude that they could have pulled off a deal for Willis, but it was completely in the power of the FO to have a top 3 of Shill, Pedro and Beckett.
  22. Tomorrow will be a very emotional game. It will be tough to watch Pedro pitching against the Sox. It will be hard to root against him. I'll have to keep reminding myself that he is not on the Red Sox.
  23. He went from being an icon on the first place team to being just another player on the second place team.
  24. They should let him pitch the 9th.
  25. Yankees used 5 pitchers agains tonight. Farnsworthless let the game get out of hand. He's not a very reliable late inning guy. Edit: make that 6 players used.
