  1. After seeing this, are the Red Sox buyers for a pitcher at the deadline?
  2. You could see that coming and now Anderson is up with runners on
  3. Does anyone know how the rotation shapes up for the Yankee series?
  4. High fast ball in the middle of the plate to Anderson ends up in the RF stands. That's not surprising.
  5. THe DP killed the opportunity for a big inning. I'd move Pedroia to the lead off spot and batYouk 2nd, especially when Ortiz comes back. The lineup will have plenty of length with Lowell and Drew batting 5/6 or 6/5. I don't think batting Youk in the 7th hole is the best use of his talent. When Ortiz returns, I'd go with the following line up: 1. Pedroia (the Destroya) 2. Youk 3. Ortiz 4. Manny 5. Drew 6. Lowell 7. Ellsbury/Crisp 8. Tek 9. Cora/Lowrie When Lowrie plays I'd think of moving him to 7th and dropping Ellsbury to 9th depending on who is hot.
  6. Yes, age will eventually stop him as it stops everyone, but waiting for age to take its toll is very frustrating. Red Sox fans are still waiting for age to take its toll on Mo.
  7. I thought it was an odd AB. He didn't even look ready to offer at any of those pitches. He didn't move a muscle. He didn't even follow the ball to the catcher's glove. I made the comment on that game thread that maybe he was up there as a decoy and Francona thought he would be walked. This would pre-suppose that he was injured and couldn't swing. it also occurred to me that Manny had no intention of swinging and that he was hitting his meltdown time of the year where he either quits for a while, demands a trade or both. If he sent an F.U. to the F.O., they'll have to get over it until they can find someone who can hit like Manny. Having heard the stories about Manny's tightness with a buck and his selling of memorabilia and gas grills, I would have expected that he would be pissed by a six-figure fine. Was this retaliation? Maybe, but Manny is generally a good team mate, so I don't think he will hurt his team to send any further messages.
  8. Yankee fans live in the ever present hope that Manny gets traded or that Manny pulls a work stoppage resulting in a trade. The drama is fodder for the sports pages. He's not going anywhere, and nothing can stop him from being a force with the bat.
  9. It is obvoius that the A's are sellers, getting rid of Harden and Blanton. What about the Texas Rangers? I think they'll be looking to sell... maybe Young?
  10. Who will sit when Sexson plays... Giambi? His career splits against lefties is .269/.384/.473/.857. Where's the big improvement?
  11. It's low cost, but when he hits .211 over a 3 or week period and leaves a ton of guys on base, it will not be low risk.
  12. Am I hearing that this is a low risk move?
  13. With the trading deadline quickly approaching, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread to discuss which teams will be buyers, which will be sellers and what they'll be buying or selling. Please let's try to have this not turn into an unsubstantiated rumor thread. Mets-- Buyers. They need to reinforce this team, because they can't afford a collapse two years in a row before they move to their new stadium. They'll be looking for a RH corner OF. They are very short on RH hitters. The bullpen looks pretty well set. If Pedro and El Duque encounter problems in the next couple of weeks, they could be looking for a middle of the rotation starter. Yankees-- Neither Buyer nor Sellers. I think they are committed to re-tooling this year. Unless they can fleece the Pirates for Nady and Marte or some other team, they will make only minor moves.
  14. You corrected misinformation by pointing out that Mo closed the '97 and 2000 All Star games? In '99 Torre pitched Cone and he let one of his former boys close out the game-- Wetteland. Also, at the time of the All Star Break in 1999 Rivera probably had his roughest period as a major leaguer. He pitched 4 games in the 6 days prior to the break and blew 2 saves giving up 4 runs in 4 1/3 innings. In his first save opportunity after the break, he gave up 4 runs blowing a save and getting the loss. The simple truth is that at the time of the All Star break, Mo was struggling badly. Maybe Joe didn't want to put him in a situation where he would fail. In 2001, Torre pitched 3 of his boys-- Clemens, Pettitte and Stanton. Torre always unabashedly favored his players and snubbed opponent's players. The fact that he used to bring the likes of Stanton made that quite obvious.
  15. Which is why the Daily News low blow on Papelbon was so despicable. There never was a controversy about who was going to close the game. Francona communicates very well with his players. I am sure that Papelbon knew where things stood before they arrived in NY, and Papelbon was not lobbying with Francona for him to change his mind. Francona respects the game and its players. Sometimes his respect for his players can cause an "L" but you have to take the good with the bad. His good points far outweight the negatives.
  16. Hey, one good apple doesn't unspoil the rest of the pile of garbage. i applaud you for being a good sport, but booing the presentation of the MVP award? That's a bit ridiculous. Once the event is over, some sportsmanship should be demonstrated. I don't hate Yankee fans. Many of my closest friends and relatives are Yankee fans. I don't hate them, but I hate the way some of them act, and when they act like jerks I let them know about it.
