  1. So, to recap the Red Sox acquisitions and signings: Ramon Ramirez from KC Brad Penny-- Injured Shoulder John Smoltz-- Recuperating from Shoulder surgery (age 41). Will not pitch until June Saito-- Partially torn elbow tendon (age 39) Rocco Baldelli -- Mystery Ilness has kept him from playing much the last couple of seasons Kotsay-- Not much of a hitter The Yankees have added: Sabathia--Cy Young Winner-- age 28 A.J. Burnett- 18 wins 2008 - age 31 Teixeira- Offensive stud and gold glove winner. Age 28 Swisher-- age 27
  2. I didn't say that we needed KRod. I was just disputing your claim that mediocre pitchers cost 5 yrs. $83 million. The best reliever went for less than half of that.
  3. Lowe will go for about half of that. As for relievers, KRod went for less than half of that.
  4. After signing Baldelli, I didn't see the need for getting Kotsay who is not a very good offensive player.
  5. This guy has a partially torn elbow ligament. He opted not to get Tommy John surgery. I don't understand this bargain basement mentality of stockpiling players with serious physical issues. Plus, this guy is old --39 years old. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/01/report_sox_sign_1.html
  6. Every century or millenium starts with 1. The history of our current A.D. calendar started with the year 1 not the year 0.
  7. I was joking too, but suggesting that I become a Yankee fan would be like suggesting that an Israeli invite a Hamas member to dinner.
  8. Yes, which is why I noted 'or first pick overall', after 'first round picks'. So they would have made better picks than Pedroia and Lester if they hadn't forfeited the first round picks for FA signings those years? My point is that there has been nothing magic about the first round as you have suggested. Our only three productive and successful draft picks since 2002 were picked in the second of fourth rounds, not the first.
  9. For which iffy veteran did I make this argument? Are you talking about Lowe? Do you call it iffy for a starting pitcher to take the ball 35 times a year and pitch more than 200 innings every year and win 10-15 games? i don't. Until you have been a Red Sox fan living in NY for 40 years, traveled to see the Sox in Spring Training for 5 straight years, traveled to Baltimore, Florida, Philadelphia and Oakland to see the Sox play, and been a fan for more than 40 years, you shouldn't even suggest this in jest.
  10. Of Bucholz, Lowrie, Ellsbury and Bowden, only Ellsbury has made any significant contribution. Am I supposed to give the FO credit for drafting unaccomplished players with potential? I'll opt to wait to see if they accomplish anything at the ML level before I praise the FO for drafting them. Also, I noticed that you left Craig Hansen off the 2005 list. He was picked ahead of all those guys except Bucholz who was a putrid 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA. Bard who will be 24 years old has still not pitched above AA. Jason Place who was the Red Sox first pick that year appears to be a bust. Pedroia was picked in the second round as was Lester. The Sox had no first round picks those years. Papelbon was picked in he 4th round. David Murphy is nothing to crow about. He was a first round pick that took 5 years to be an average outfielder on a lousy team. Hagadone? Didn't he just get TJ surgery?
  11. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/ It's final. Happy Days!
  12. There are some good catchers. How would either of us know what it would take to get one of them? Anyone better than Lugo/Lowrie
  13. First of all, I would not limit myself to Lowe. Trades are still an option...no? As for those draft picks that have been so productive, since 2002, 3 guys have established themselves as prominent players--Pedroia (2004), Papelbon (2003) and Lester (2002). I don't count Bucholz, Lowrie or even Ellsbury. Ellsbury is the most accomplished, but the jury is still out on whether he will be a big time CFer. Where are the other 350 players drafted since 2002? What have they accomplished? Three out of 350, 4 out of 350 if you count Ellsbury. There are better odds at the blackjack table.
  14. Exactly, the Red Sox are not those teams and they have freed up a lot of payroll since last season, so they should not be signing injured, post-operative, and diseased players on the cheap in the hope that they will contribute. These acquisitions may pique your curiosity, but my view is that not of them will make significant contributions in 2009.
  15. I'll grant you that they didn't give up much to get these guys, but they will probably not get much from any of them, so as a fan, what do these moves give to look forward to? Am I supposed to get excited in March to see the improved financial reports of the team, because I can't say that I will be excited at the prospect of seeing these guys take up a roster spot and sit on the DL or bench all year. Is Jim Abbott available? He only has one hand, but at least he is not injured, post-op, or diseased. I say, let's add a cripple to this fine roster of 2009 acquisitions.
  16. Am I supposed to get excited when the Sox have signed three players -- two pitchers who combined to make 22 starts in 2008 (and one is 41 yrs old) and the OFer played in 28 games in 2008 and 35 in 2007 and has a mystery disease? Is there really reason to be optimistic about these guys?
  17. With Penny,Smoltz and Baldelli coming on board, the Sox will need to beef up their medical and training staff.
  18. Maybe the Red Sox would have drafted someone else. There are always good players in the draft that go on to have fine professional careers, but most don't. As for Lugo, giving up a pine tar rag for him might have been too high a price.
  19. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090107&content_id=3736434&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos He's on a pace to return June 1 at the earliest. One or two setbacks, which always seem to happen in these cases, and he may never toe the Fenway rubber.
