  1. Varitek is not good at throwing out base runners, but he is a good receiver and game-caller. Your question was premised on there being no other offers. My response is that if he signs elsewhere there had to be at least one other offer. It's only a genius offer if he accepts the Sox offer.
  2. Some people think there is nothing wrong with kiss and tell books and they sell plenty of books. Selling plenty of books is not a justification for classless behavior.
  3. Neither of those guys are good catchers.
  4. ... and they will be stuck with three unaccomplished talentless bums to handle the catching chores in '09. Genius....?
  5. ...and once Tek signs elsewhere, the price of another catcher will go up, because the Sox will have lost significant negotiating leverage.
  6. Yes, I have said those things in private about my bosses, but I would probably not publish a book about it. Also, he calling his players frauds and prima donas. That's where he hurts his reputation. He is saying things about guys who he took into his confidence purely to sensationalize his book. That is classless tabloid journalism.
  7. That doesn't leave the Sox much time to make a deal for a catcher in time for the opening of camp. My prediction is that Varitek signs elsewhere. The deal doesn't seem to have much in the way of incentives. IMO, He can get the $5 million chump change elsewhere plus incentives. He's a proud guy. He will not let himself be bullied by the FO, and he's probably pissed at Boras too.
  8. Airing grievances against the FO is not classless. He owes them nothing. I think it is foolish, because he has now put the last nail in his coffin with regard to Yankee brass, and he has, by his childish actions going back to his quitting, cut himself off from a substantial source of income. What is classless is talking out of school about players and coaches for things other than their on-field performance. That is classless, pure and simple. He was so big on doing things behind closed doors with the players and he took them into his confidence. This is a betrayal of who he pretended to be. I could understand if Piniella did this, because he has always publicly criticized his players. He never pretended to take them into his confidence. Torre has exposed himself as an enormous phony.
  9. Unless he is going into senile dementia, which I have suspected since his hissy fit when he walked out on the Yankees to take a lower paid job in LA, he should regret the fact that he has blown the opportunity to make a pretty penny from the Yankees for personal appearances after his managing days are done. Showing up at a game for dinner and glad-handing some luxury box fans is nice work. Even a social recluse like Yaz doesn't pass on that kind of easy money.
  10. By then the Steinbrenners will have decided to exile him from Yankee stadium. Yogi's exile lasted more than 10 years, and Yogi didn't write a book. Yogi's exile was self-imposed, but Steinbrenner didn't try to woo him back for more than 10 years. This is far worse than what Yogi did. The Steinbrenners will view this as a direct slap in the face. He will be persona non grata at Yankee Stadium and the Steinbrenners will never forgive him. Yogi was a great Yankee player with 10 rings. Torre was merely a manager who never played for the Yanks. He's done in the eyes of the Yankee brass. No plaques, no honors, no Joe Torre celebrations, ever.
  11. Petitte and Yanks are close to a 1 year deal: http://www.nypost.com/seven/01262009/sports/yankees/report__yankees__pettitte_close_to_one_y_152129.htm
  12. By co-authoring the book, he has given his approval to everything in the book.
  13. Not when you are getting paid more than every other manager. It goes with the territory. Big pay = Big expectations.
  14. No, he just does in-game updates-- mainly on the weekend.
  15. I have a friend that works for WFAN in NY. He has been doing the in-game updates for as long as WFAN has been in existence. Michael Kay told him the Suzyn Waldman story. In fact, Kay said that one night he got a knock on the door and it was Boggs. Boggs apologized for waking Kay explaining that he thought it was Suzynn's room. As was his custom, Boggs was not too discreet with his extra-marital activity.
  16. I'm happy that he wrote the book, because I love to see dysfunction with the Yankees. The Steinbrenners and the weasel Cashman are fair game, but with regard to the players, even ARod, it is a classless move.
  17. Oh my Gawd!!! Wade Boggs was in Suzyn Waldman's box!!!
