Possible but unlikely. Pedroia, Youk, and Papelbon will make the squad and possibly one or two starters. They will not take another Sox player. Edit: Alberto Callaspo of KC is likely to get the nod ahead of Beltre too.

2010 is not a valid comparable. As for the other trends, those are all really good numbers. Even the incomparable, Mo had a few years where his WHIP exceeded 1.1 and he had several years where his WHIP exceeded 1. He also had a four year stretch early in his career frm 1999-2002 where his k's/9 were 5.6, 6.9, 6.8 and 6.8. Was that a trend of bad things?

He's still excellent. No one is the the same pitchers after 4 or 5 years and batters are constantly making adjustments. Closers have the advantage of hitters not seeing them a whole lot, so it takes longer to make adjustments to them than to a starting pitcher. The guys from teams in his own division see him more and they have made the adjustments quicker than the rest of the league. Papelbon has been making adjustments too. Anyone who thinks that Mo hasn't made adjustments throughout the years is just kidding themselves. His bread and butter is still the cut fastball that goes away from righties and in to lefties, but that is not all he throws. He's developed a two seamer that runs the opposite way. There were years where he used a 4 seamer a lot. The great ones adjust as they go along and continue to get excellent results. They are concerned with results not peripherals.

Papelbon doesn't have to revert to anything. He's better than most of the best, and that's all he needs to be. Any change in his stats probably reflect the fact of adjustments by opposing batters to him and vice versa. They don't reflect a diminishing ability. They just don't as his results are consistently excellent, and that's what matters, not peripherals.

One of the few autographs that I have obtained in person is Michael Irvin's. Here's how it happened. It might work for you. We went to this place called the Dallas Cowboy Cafe. It's owned by two former Cowboys, and many of the Cowboys are there on Thursday night. I went there years ago when Irvin was still playing. A civilian (i.e. Non football player) is not to engage or bother a player in any way or you will be thrown out. At closing time, we went over to Michael's table and mentioned to one of the ladies that our kids were big fans. He wouldn't even look at us, even though he heard the conversation. We asked her if she thought he would give us an autograph. She tapped him on the arm and asked him to give us an autograph. He was not too pleased, but he was not at all nasty about it. He signed with his jersey #. The owners came over as we were getting the autograph and asked us to leave. We got it and left. Good luck. -

If he ends up with an OPS around .800 with 30 + bombs that is pretty good productivity.

f*** Papelbon! If he wants money, get rid of him. So what that he is the all-time team leader in saves and that he is in his prime. Saves is a meaningless category.

Ortiz with 3 HRs in his last 4 games and people want to cut him and bring up a minor leaguer. Unbelievable. He has 3 more HRs than at this point last season.

I hope the big guy has a big game tonight and gets on a roll, especially going into the Yankee series. Last year, he hit 2 HRs off Burnett.

I really can't get excited about a report that says "possible but unlikely". I have a lot of trouble getting by the "unlikely" part. Scott Boras is no doubt ecstatic about the Red Sox recent troubles. Ellsbury's market value has gone up with each loss.

It's nothing that an injection or two of HGH can't solve. After all, in Andy's church it's not cheating if you do it only to get back on the field.

Cutting Ortiz to call up Nava is not going to happen whether Nava sits on the bench or is the water boy. That is not a possibility. Anyone in the Red Sox FO that would suggest such a thing would get demoted to concessions.

As it has turned out, Ortiz's bad start has crippled the team. I don't think anyone can dispute that. When they didn't acquire a big stick, a lot of us on this board knew that it would be critical for Ortiz to be productive and not get off to a slow start. I think the FO knew that too.

Maybe Ortiz is done and maybe the Sox need to cut him, but it is posts like this one that make it hard to take you seriously. Cut Ortiz and call up Nava? That ain't going to happen.Maybe he gets called up if Ortiz goes on the DL, but they are not going to DFA him to bring up Nava. They would wait until Ellsbury and Cameron come back.

They'll play better, more consistent ball when the pitching gets on track, but if we are 10 games behind 2 teams in our division by the end of May, the will not have a shot at a playoff spot unless they can run the table head to head against the Yankees or the Rays.

I didn't see the game, but it looks like it was an ugly game for Ortiz with 2 K's and 2 DP's. There are reports of a wrist problem now, which could spell the end of Ortiz and the end of the Red Sox season. Two nice victories the last two nights have allowed the Red Sox to tread water while wearing cement shoes. The Yanks and Tampa are doing what the Sox could not do-- beat the weak sisters of the league. Once the Sox let bay walk and didn't replace his bat with a big stick, they were placing a heavy bet that Ortiz could be a force in the lineup and that he would get off to a fast start. If the Red Sox lose any more ground before the end of the month, all of the off season planning will have gone up in flames-- a flash fire-- with 4 months left to go in the season. I guess a lot of us will be waiting for pre-season football in August.
