  1. I took notice of Terry Ryan's quote bolded above. He said: "I took a risk. It was a high risk with high reward." That is the proper characterization of a low cost- long shot. He clearly has an understanding of investment risks and and rewards unlike the History major that ran the Red Sox who constantly and incorrectly referred to dumpster diving as low risk- high reward.
  2. Sounds like a good idea. I will do my part as well. Leaders lead.
  3. Ortiz seems to be stepping forward. If a captain is named, it should be him
  4. He'd break his hand hitting a heavy bag. The speed bag would knock him out.
  5. LL on the Scutaro trade: Yes, salary dumping your starting shortstop is always a good baseball move. Shaughnessy called LL's attempt to sell the Scutaro trade as a baseball move "a whopper."
  6. I don't know if I want to be part of a world where baseball and beer don't go together.
  7. And 2004 is the last season we didn't have injuries to our starting staff.
  8. Beer banned from MLB clubhouses? This is the the Civil Rights issue of our time.
  9. What if Vodka got banned in your town? How would you feel about that?
  10. That is funny.
  11. Yaz smoked in the dugout before games, and I think that was against league rules. He came to play every day and prepared himself more than any player. Funny story about Yaz and Ted Williams and beer. Williams invited Yaz to go fishing on his boat during Spring Training. Yaz showed up with a cooler of beer. Williams was serious about his fishing. It wasn't just a couple of guys having fun. Williams points to the cooler and tells Yaz that there is no beer allowed on his boat. Yaz told Williams: "See ya later, Ted" and he walked away. I am sure that's how a lot of the players feel about this stupid rule. In Girardi's first year managing the Yanks, he had the ice cream machine removed from the clubhouse and candy was banned and replaced with dried fruit and nuts. I thought that was stupid too.
  12. I think this is just stupid.
  13. This was the liveliest off-season thread in the most uneventful off season in recent Red Sox history. Strip away the bickering and name-calling and emotion, and there is a lot of good stuff here. For better or worse, it is the record of TalkSox in the 2011 offseason. I have never been a big believer in censoring or sanitizing a record. It is what it is and it should remain warts and all, unless the book burners have their way.
  14. There is one key difference with the example of your daughter. Your daughter does not pay for the lollipopps, the cupcakes or the waffles. In fact, without you, she would not exist, just like the Red Sox would not exist without the fans.
  15. Yeah, the game started off badly. Dice k was a late scratch after warming in the bullpen and Scott Atchinson got the emergency start against the powerful Phillies. We got behind early, but Blanton loaded the bases for Nava, and he hit the first pitch into the bullpen. I remember turning to my son and telling him that I thought it was the kid's first AB. I don't think he'll ever make it in the majors for any team, but he has one fantastic memorable moment.
  16. I was at the game against Philly when he hit the Grand Slam. It was very exciting, and he was scorching hot for about a week, but then it was straight down hill. It is pretty clear that he does not have major league skills. He can make contact, but he has almost no power and he is a terrible outfielder. After 2010, I predicted that we would never again see him in a Red Sox uni except maybe for a cup of coffee in September and that he wil be out of baseball in a couple or 3 years at most. He is Morgan Burkhart 10 years later, but Burkhart was better and had more power. I don't think Nava is in the mix for anything.
  17. On the Sox Report the other day, Gammons was saying that Iglesias needed about 400 Abs at AAA to be ready. It sounded like he was communicating the organizational plan for Iglesias. I think Bobby V would like to take him north, but if he makes the team either Punto or Aviles have to get released. I don't think they are ready to do that until they are somewhat certain that Iglesias is ready.
  18. Baseball America? Hah! Who are they? Just more baseless opinion.
  19. What he was thinking when he said that:
  20. The funny thing is that Bellhorn04 started off the name-calling by referring to himself as a pollyanna and namby pamby. He called himself that and everyone blamed the Sawxhead contingent for name-calling.
