  1. Musial was a more complete player than Williams. He was an excellent fielder and base runner too. Williams was not a good base runner and his fielding was just adequate. Edit: The debate has always been DiMaggio vs. Williams, because they played in the bigger media market. Musial belongs in the debate. He was a better all around player than Williams, and he was versatile playing 1st and OF at an excellent level. He was a better hitter than DiMaggio. Williams was the best hitter of the 3, but he was one dimensional compared to the other two. They were the 3 giants of the generation, but you hear very little about Musial.
  2. Any interest in DLowe for depth?
  3. Lillibridge was thrown in because he was going to get cut when they added Youkilis. We took him to make it look like we got a return. He had no value. Neither does Nava.
  4. Merry Christmas, Fred!
  5. people probably don't think of Miggy, because he has played in Florida and Detroit. Stan the Man played when there were only 8 teams in each league and yet he was still underrated in the press which paid much more attention to joe D and Teddy Ballgame. Musial was their equal, but largely ignored by people who do not come from the Midwest. Hank Greenberg was a giant of the game, but not from the east coast media Mecca.
  6. It looks like that. What's next, arguing current pitching terms like whether a guy' s stuff is "filthy" or "electric".
  7. Nava has zero trade value.
  8. It's silly to argue over these terms which are themselves just part of current day popular parlance. Ten or twenty years from now we will be using different terms. Miggy is pretty great and he would be a top hitter in any generation. He is the best hitter in the game right now without question, and he's in his prime. He may be better than Manny, and he doesn't have the stigma of PEDs.
  9. Have there been reports that Cherries is interested in Kubel?
  10. I am sure that the can sign him, but why sign him if he has a condition that would prevent him from catching.
  11. I agree. If the injury will limit Napoli to playing first base, go after the better first baseman-- LaRoche.
  12. Some might think that 3/$39 million is a ridiculous overpay for a catcher with a bad hip.
  13. i would prefer to part with Iggy. Kalish can hit and steal bases. Iggy will probably never hit MLB pitching.
  14. Jones was the only Pirate who stepped up and played well last season as the Pirates were going down the drain at the end of the season.
  15. Jacko, after a quick look at the Yankee roster, I think they still have some off season work to do. I can't believe that they will go into the season with Cervelli (a bum) and Romine (a rookie) to hold down the catching. Also, it seems that they need a RH bat in the OF to go along with Ichiro, Grandy and Gardner. Unless Jeter will be 100% on opening day, a backup SS would probably be a good idea. What are you hearing about any moves to fill these hoels?
  16. I am curious to see if the other piece from Pittsburgh is a major league piece or a prospect. If we are including a major league piece like Melancon (good riddance to that piece of garbage) maybe a major league piece will be coming back. I really like the idea of Garrett Jones coming with Hanrahan.
  17. Have the final pieces of this trade been announced? I can't find anything on the completion of the trade.
  18. Swisher may be the biggest post season choker in history.
  19. So, the trade is essentially a couple of minor leaguers, Jed Lowrie and a player to be named for Hanrahan and a player to be named.
  20. Yes, the Garrett Jones part would make a lot of sense. By trading Sands we would need to acquire a 1B/OF type. Jones would fill that role perfectly.
  21. 2 other pieces from Boston and 1 more from the Pirates.
  22. A 4 for 2 deal? Bigger than I would have expected.
  23. And this illustrates why states should be used as Vin Scully says. He says stats should be used the way a drunk uses a lamp post-- for support not illumination. Hanrahan is clearly the superior talent.
