They should eliminate all the all star games in all the sports.
They are all terrible and nobody watches them, and nobody wants to play in them. This would hurt the players in the wallet because many receive all star bonus's when they are selected, even if they dont play.
The writers association should pick the "all star" team and put it on paper only. After a couple of years of losing money and it not being on TV, the players and fans might want to see the home run derby and all star game after being without it.
Either that, or replace the game completely with an old timers game (like the Yankees do) and a skills competition where the home run derby is only a piece of the competition. Skill competitions should consist of events like best outfield arm, best infield arm, fastest baserunner, best contact hitter (using wiffleballs), best catcher arm, home run derby, a h.o.r.s.e type hitting game, best hitting pitcher competition, a home run derby for pitchers, have a "hardest throwing" non-pitcher competition.....any of those are more fun to think about than a bunch of players playing in a game they dont give a s*** about. Make the all star break more about the individual players rather than a team. Allow the players to show the fans things that we dont normally see, like positional players pitching, pitchers trying to hit home runs, or pitchers who can run faster than "base stealers" That would be more interesting. Put a point valule on all the mini competitions so that the players can compete for the crown of "best player" in baseball based on specific skill sets.
