Wakefield has a lifetime contract with the Red Sox. Basically a cycle of option years, until the Sox say otherwise. 2007 is looking like his last season in the majors. Certainly wont be the last we see of him in Boston. A recent inerview had him talking about how he sees himself as hopefully a pitching coach for the Sox down the road. EDIT: Also (if possible) Id like them evaluate the free agent backup catchers, and see who wouldnt mind working with Wakefield during the offseason. As we saw this past season, Varitek's stamina is in question and he's already at the age where catchers will just start to decline more. Maybe its a pipe dream of mine... a free agent catcher this season is Rod Barajas. He's not likely to return to Texas since they want to hand the job to Gerald Laird. There wont be that much of a market for him this offseason, even some looking for a starter will be scared off by his career .282 OBP.
