I may have mentioned it before, but I have a lot of family in Renfrew, PA, which is near Pittsburgh. My grandfather was a huge Pirates fan until the 94 strike, after which he refused to watch baseball ever again, and my father is a lapsed Pirates fan who only knows that they have sucked for the last 20 years. As a Steelers fan who was raised by Pirates fans, I would love to see the Pirates win it all, if it wasn't for the Sox. If for some reason the Sox don't make it to the Series, I want Pittsburgh to take it all. I know the phone calls from my relatives in PA will be awesome.
In a lot of ways, this reminds me of 2007. I always followed the Rockies, from the time I became a baseball fan. They were my NL team, the team that I rooted for when they were playing anyone except the Sox. And then, they finally make it to a World Series, and I couldn't root for them, because they were playing against my team. If the Pirates make it, I will be in the same situation again. It doesn't matter in the end, though. I won't lose any sleep, because I am first and foremost a Red Sox fan, and will take just as much joy in the Sox pounding the Pirates as I did when they absolutely embarrassed the Rockies. And given the way the Pirates have played the last two decades, just making it to the postseason is a hell of an accomplishment.
