The velocity was an improvement though. He was sitting 92-93 up until around 55 pitches. It's understandable that he'd start to tire at that point, considering the length of his minor league rehab outings.
But, on the whole, I've just never been a fan of Hughes. FB with decent life, poor location, and little movement. CB with good location, but loopy to the point where it can't really generate swings and misses. And the cutter and the change are subpar. Tonight was representative of Hughes' entire career as a starting pitcher ... always gets ahead of hitters but can't put them away. Until he finds a way to consistently finish off hitters, he'll never be more than a decent pitcher over the course of a full season.
