I do think that, because what happens in small samplings has no predictive value. Let me ask you this. Player A is the best player on his team. Player B is a poor hitting bench player. However, against the pitcher they're facing, Player A is a career 1/20 off him, while Player B is 7/20. Based on your argument, Player B should start. Do you actually think this?

Because his overall numbers are a much larger sample size, and are more indicative of how good he actually is. His numbers vs the Blue Jays are a small sample size, and small sample sizes are flukey.

Yeah, because those statistics are more relevant than their overall numbers. Something is to be said for sample sizes.

I think the fact that Romero is a very good pitcher and that the Red Sox's bats aren't lighting the world on fire as of late is more relevant than the fact that the Sox have hit Romero in the past. EDIT: They may hit Romero, but I don't think it's nearly as certain as you're making it out to be.

They played till 2:10 in the morning and have a 10.5 game lead of the Wild Card with no true off days remaining in the regular season ... I have no problem with today's lineup.

I really don't think they're going to get a team to take AJ off their hands and pay a chunk of the contract, but who knows. As for the rotation, I'm right there with you. I never would have thought, going into the season, that Garcia, Colon, and Nova would be this effective for such an extended period of time. I'm also pretty shocked that this team has a legitimate chance at winning 100 games. I really thought this year was going to be similar to 2008 ... and I'm obviously thrilled to be totally wrong. The one place I disagree is that I'd be quicker to resign Garcia than Colon. I think Garcia's success has a better chance to translate into next year.

OK, but quality starts are pretty overrated if the pitcher is simply doing the bare minimum to get that quality start.

This isn't a contradiction. Someone achieving a high amount of quality starts isn't necessarily having a good year. But if a pitcher isn't even getting quality starts (meaning most starts are worse than 6 IP, 3 ER), it's just more evidence to suggest he isn't having a good year.
