  1. I don't like this trade at all, mostly for reasons already mentioned here. His contract is expensive and he just didn't show anyone he's the kind of player he can be.
  2. It's now official. Teams have to be tracking umps by next season. This is from Chris Snow in the Globe: A search of BaseballProspectus.com found that of the 61 umpires to work the plate for 30 or more games this season, Cuzzi called a higher percent of pitches strikes than all but four umpires. Cuzzi deemed 63.9 percent of the pitches he saw strikes. Tops on the list? Believe it or not, it was Eddings, and by a significant margin. Eddings called 66 percent of pitches strikes, followed by Mike Everitt (64.3 percent), Gary Darling (64.1 percent), Hunter Wendelstedt (64 percent), and Cuzzi.
  3. He seems to breaking down way too much for a player who turned 30 this year. He did get more at bats against leftys late in the season. He's got to stay healthy next year and hit leftys.
  4. Anyone who blames the umps is looking for an excuse. But these are things that good pitchers have known all along. Certain umps have more favorable strike zones and hitters should take note and adjust.
  5. It was one year ago today, October 17 when Dave Roberts made the greatest stolen base in Red Sox history. Moments later he dashed home with a slide and a spin and rest is history. No longer with the Sox, his place in the hearts of the Nation is set in stone. Therefore, from now on I will always mark this day as Dave Roberts Day.
  6. I bet Bill James starts keeping stats on umps from now on. With controversy in both the ALCS and NLCS it will be interesting to see the crew for the WS.
  7. I'm not anti Sox. There's no question they are the better team. I amazed at the umpiring in both series. The replay showed AJ make two strides to the left of the foul line when a throw was made to first.
  8. 1 This is not Little League. 2 MLB Rule 7.09 (k): In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line and, in the umpire's judgment, interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, or attempting to field a batted ball; The lines marking the three foot lane are a part of that "lane" but the interpretation to be made is that a runner is required to have both feet within the three foot "lane" or on the lines marking the "lane."
  9. AJ did run out of the box partially blocking the throw. Unreal.
  10. Picked this up from Dirt Dogs. A very interesting WSJ article on stats on umps. Even so, I can't bring myself to blame the umps for the sweep. http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB112925287632868400-ZDHwXHWx_1y56rUF9Pm2wlJ1dmo_20061014.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top
  11. Yet another trade rumor involving the PawSox catcher. Get some value and get it over with. Tek is going to the catcher for a while. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/rockies/article/0,1299,DRMN_19_4151397,00.html
  12. Saying the call has nothing to do with the outcome is not exactly an objective opinion. Sure Escobar made a lousy 0-2 pitch, but by all accounts he should have out of the inning. This was one of the most embarrassing displays of umpiring I've ever seen. Unlike Larry Barnett or Denkinger, this homeplate ump not only got a call wrong, but he made the wrong hand signal. He compounded the problem by not sticking to the call he made with his hand, and then not asking for help. Very amateur. Sure it's annoying to Chicago to have it labled that way, but you know to themselves they're laughing about it.
  13. Matsui is no gold glove, at times he can have "Manny Moments". Besides, he made 8 mill this year and the MFY will pay him more because he is a very marketable commodity in NY, they even sold Japanese ads on the rightfield wall.
  14. White Sox and Angels, what a great series for thunder stix. I can't get enough of thunder stix!!!!
  15. I thought Rent did a good job turning DP's, especially when moving to his left. Another point is many of the baserunning blunders center on the third base coach.
  16. Love that dirty water!
  17. Live well everyday. Your generosity here to Sox fans is unmatched. Be strong and we'll stay in your corner.
  18. From Chris Snow in the Globe on Wells: He's pondering retirement, and will have that discussion with his wife. It wouldn't be entirely surprising if he requested a trade back to the West Coast, to pitch closer to his California home. He didn't particularly enjoy the city of Boston, socially, which Epstein acknowledged. ''The first year in Boston can leave you feeling like you need some time off," Epstein said. ''He was a little taken aback by how passionate the fan base was. You expect a guy who's played in New York to make a seamless transition to Boston. ''It was tough on him. I think he used the word hermit. I know David doesn't like to be a hermit." But, Epstein added, ''This guy's pretty competitive. We saw the way this guy pitched down the stretch. This guy has a lot left. He's a guy we'd love to have back."
  19. Since when do pro ballplayers turn down money? If he can walk, he'll pitch. The problem is, he may pressure Theo for a trade if he's still down on Boston.
  20. I didn't see the tape, but the guy on Fox Radio said it was Aaron Small and not the batboy.
  21. I just realized this team just didn't have the pitching. I thought about last year, took my kids to a movie, and then watched Game 3 of last year's ALDS at home. I woke up the next day looking forward to spring training. This is interesting: Fox Sports Radio reported Saturday night that a number of MFY players were seen clapping in the dugout when the Sox score went on the scoreboard Friday night. I can't figure out if this was some backhanded sign of respect indicating they wanted no part of the Red Sox again, or if this is just another classless display by a franchise that is increasingly becoming disconnected from its glorious past.
  22. In the week before the trading deadline when Manny didn't play, Ortiz was practically walked on every at bat. Replacing Manny as well as a guy who can protect Ortiz is impossible. Also consider Renteria scored over a hundred runs in a year he didn't hit all that well. All thanks to Ortiz and Manny. If you think this team struggled after losing pitching just wait until the clean up hitter is gone.
  23. The best part was going through the year as World Champs. It was tough to watch Schilling and Foulke break down and then seeing Pedro being Pedro with the Mets. It was a miracle this team did so well with inconsistent starting pitching and no help from the bullpen. Big Papi had a season to remember.
  24. If Edgar didn't hit well with Ortiz and Manny behind him, I don't know how he'll hit better next year if Manny is traded. If there is no Manny, the first priority is finding protection for Ortiz, GOOD LUCK. The Sox need a front line starter, Morris and Burnett are the big options, but they both have red flags, Morris has shown a good curve ball this year, but it's suspicious how good a year he's having now in his free agent year. Burnett staying healthy for a season is a concern. Trade Clement, now. Matt has a history of breaking down late in the season and at this stage he won't get better. I'd like to see them keep Arroyo, he's still young enough to be patient with him. I also like BJ Ryan, he throws hard strikes and gets outs. They should also re-sign Timlin.
