  1. I don't see this tournament generating much interest at all. The only team I'll be interested in watching will be Cuba, just because no one sees them play and there are some very good players there. I really enjoy the Carribbean Series. The level of play is very good with a good number of major leaguers on the rosters, except for the goofy play that ended the last game (pop fly bouncing off the DR shortstop's head for the Venezuela win). It comes at a time of the year when I'm ready to see baseball. The fans are really into the games and it's a little different especially the constant playing of music during the game.
  2. I happen to love the spring. These games are meaningless, but it's great just to watch a game. I even watched all the Carribbean World Series games online. I'm sure there are football freaks who will watch NFL Europe games.
  3. Sweet Coco Crispies!! Very nice spring debut.
  4. As I recall Manny showed a slow bat and had an awful spring last year that actually carried over into the first few weeks of the season. Maybe this shows some committment on his part to start the season in good shape, or he just doesn't care (more likely).
  5. I don't want to start Tito bashing, because I believe he is a good manager, but the '04 run was more about outstanding performances by individuals than it was strategic moves by Francona, although he did use solid defensive players late in games with leads, which is what you would expect. As for Torre, I think he did make a difference in '03 against Grady. Lifting Roger early in Game 7 for Mussina, I believe, cost the Sox a trip to the series that year.
  6. I think my 2004 hangover is finally over.
  7. Torre seems to always be one step ahead of the opposing manager and he's a master at handling players and his insane boss. I hate being against him in close games.
  8. I think given the circumstances of this winter the Gonzo signing is best. Everyone wants to see Pedroia succeed, and he'll only improve his chances by starting in Pawtucket. Boston can be a pressure cooker for new free agents, but it is ten times worse for rookies (Cla Meredith). Gonzo is not expected to be a heavy offensive impact player. He has shown some cluthch hitting this week and if he can be more patient at the plate, I don't think we'll be disappointed. Plus he's money with the glove. I saw him turn a nice double play this week.
  9. Gonzo tying base hit in the 9th for Venezuela. Clutch!
  10. If you're asking about the Caribbean games, then this is it: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/events/mlb_winterleagues_2006.jsp In the right column, just click the small baseball diamond next to each game.
  11. Gonzo plays tonight at 7. Streaming for high speed connections: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/cs/index.jsp
  12. It is good news, the best news since Beckett. Now he comes back after the salary shedding and bad PR with no blame. He is completely golden and probably now twice as powerful.
  13. I think Markakis is the O's number one prospect. That would be a steal.
  14. Even if this rumor is true, I doubt the Rays go through with it given their history.
  15. In keeping with this thread, the Toronto media is already putting the Jays ahead of the Sox. It's time for Yawkey Way to start making some moves. http://torontosun.com/Sports/Baseball/2005/12/29/pf-1371971.html
  16. Say goodbye to Millwood. Texas wins with a 4 year deal and a team option for a 5th. Another quality player gone, along with the trade options it created. Maybe they're still going over the stats and working on a plan.
  17. Is Millwood really a need right now? It seems to me the FO should be looking for a centerfielder and shortstop instead to running to Boras for another pitcher.
  18. If not for Grady Little, the Sox should have won two world titles. Admittedly the 2004 Sox had a run and some changes needed to be made. But except for Varitek, this FO has let everyone go. I admit, it was a bit of a rant, but I think Tony Massarotti nailed it in today's Herald: "...the Sox generally seem inclined to let the market dictate the price, then decide they do not want to pay it."
  19. THEY BLEW IT UP! World Series champs two years ago and now this. This FO team wrote the book on building a champ and then they kick out the GM and drop a bomb on a team that won 95 games and only needed some pitching help and a first basemen. Now they act like it's Kansas City with this "small market, shedding salary" philosophy. And here we are at the start of 2006, with more holes than when the season ended. This has to be one of the worst offseason's ever for this team. I do not want to wait for the 2009 Red Sox while NY wins titles. With the highest ticket prices in baseball, this FO should be reloading, not rebuilding. They're so inexperienced and delusional, they thought they had Damon where they wanted him, and now there's a big friggin' crater in centerfield, and we're talking about Corey Paterson or Jeremy Reed taking his place? If this keeps up seats at Fenway will be fairly easy to get by July.
  20. Theo had a pretty good relationship with Boras, as evidenced by the Tek signing last year. The problem this year is not Boras, but the inexperienced FO that was overmatched by Boras.
  21. It's a good thing that back up catcher position is settled before Christmas. I was beginning to worry. Now all that's left is centerfield, first base, shortstop and Manny.
  22. I don't like that deal. Paterson didn't cut it with the Cubs, and Prior will just take up space on the DL.
  23. It's clear that if Reed was the guy, then the deal would have been done by now. The Duo are obviuosly looking around for an "impact" player or a "fan favorite" like Roberts.
  24. With the holes on this team, forget about NY, I'm wondering if the Jays are better right now.
  25. The way it looks, I don't think the FO has a plan. They were stunned by Theo. Beckett fell into their lap with the Florida fire sale and then they got stuck with Lowell. Then they deal for another third basemen in Marte, creating a hole at short. They somehow lost out on a trade for Overbay to play first base. Larry likes Beattie, but suddenly the Duo get the GM job. They spent two months trying to deal Manny, unsuccessfully. They also couldn't deal Wells. They deal for Loretta, knowing Pedroia is close and then offer arbritation to Graff, which he accepts, leaving them with 3 second basemen. And now Damon leaves for NY while the FO keeps hoping Theo comes back soon. Now the Sox have no lead off hitter and an infield of Youk, Loretta, Cora and Lowell. I doubt there's a plan. It looks like they're winging it and it's not going well. Just wait until Manny is a no-show in the spring.
