  1. I seriously doubt any MFY fan will convince anyone here about a-rod. This vote comes down to how much influence the NY media has in convincing other voters that the DH position is some sort of lesser position. This is similar to the same tired arguments they put up in '86 about a pitcher winning MVP when Clemens was with the Sox.
  2. If it's over, I wonder if Torre rests Mussina and some players Sunday or if he goes all out knowing he might face the Sox in the ALCS.
  3. I hate seeing him on that stupid horse.
  4. I really don't know why Tito thought Bradford could go another inning by starting the 8th. He did his job by getting out of the 7th. It's frustrating to watch this bullpen. The first Blue Jay hitters in the 8th and 9th were WALKED and they SCORED. It seems the only hope is to get 7 innings out of the starters and then Papelbon and Timlin to close it out. Thankfully the O's have a little pride tonight.
  5. Saturday's game is a perfect example of why there are minor leagues and coaches in pro ball. This kid may bring gas, but he needs a second pitch, and he needs to build his strength. When he got the so called "dead arm" three weeks ago after less than half a season in pro ball, the club should have sent him home for the winter. Unfortunately the situation is so desperate, he jumps from college ball to double A to the big leagues in a matter of months to save a terrible bullpen.
  6. Solid win tonight. Arroyo recovered well and Papelbon fired heat in the 8th. The only concern tonight is Damon. I know they're saying hitting doesn't cause pain but he doesn't seem to be making good swings. Two more road games and the Sox come home.
  7. Maybe at some point Arroyo will start establishing his breaking pitches, since he's not throwing his fastball by these hitters.
  8. If they are going to win a stretch of games here, then they must have Damon in the lineup, and Tito cannot burn Timlin out, he's going to have to trust some of the new kids, Delcarmen, Papelbon and Hansen out of the pen. Bradford and Myers are strictly situational. And somehow, by some miracle, Clement and Wells have to turn it around. One more thing, Ortiz must stay hot.
  9. It's a shame. If he was healthy, the Sox might have clinched the division by now. With his salary and health, I can't see a trade happening. Let's just hope he gets better by spring.
  10. Didn't Hansen get a "dead arm" this month after a half season of pro ball? Who knows what this kid is made of? No one can tell simply because he blew away double A hitters and three Devil Rays.
  11. Hansen hasn't pitched a full season of pro ball and all of a sudden he's next year's closer? He'll be in Pawtucket to start the spring. He might need a little coaching and time to master his slider before he starts clsoing out big league games. The FO made a desperate call to bring him up now and toss some heat. Too bad Tito didn't bring him in tonight to fire up a K in the 8th.
  12. After Wednesday night's game it seems like a good time to start a thread on the moves of Francona down the stretch. Tito obviously seems determined to sink with Millar, and his use of the bullpen this week needs to be questioned. Timlin has let 18 of 32 inherited runners score this year, so bringing him in the 8th seems to make no sense. Papelbon has been groomed to be the set-up guy, and the obvious first choice to come out of the pen to get one out. Hansen was also available. Why call up the kids if he doesn't want to use them?
  13. Timlin is a complete car wreck.
  14. it's not over yet, just get out of this inning.
  15. PITCHING....it all comes down to pitching.
  16. No one is doubting Papelbon's ability to come in relief. I just don't see how he goes a whole season as a starter tossing heat and hoping he finds command of the splitter. This season he has been bounced back and forth from a starter to a reliever, and his development as either doesn't seem to be a big concern. I also have doubts about Wells coming back. There's no way he doesn't wind up on the DL at age 43 next year.
  17. Wow, we needed a win like that.
  18. I kid Rent, but really I hold my breath every time a ball is hit near him.
  19. I really think Rent should be using two hands on pop ups.
  20. Is that 30 for Rent?
  21. I don't like dealing Arroyo. Aside from his momentarily lapses of concentration and walking three batters in an inning, he does have some nasty breaking stuff and seems to be maturing as a pitcher. I don't think Papelbon is completely solid yet as a starter. As proved last night, hitters are starting to zone in on him, and he can't just hurl heat all season. He needs to master his splitter, which he only learned to pitch this year.
  22. This was a low risk gamble that didn't pay off. It might be nice this winter to try and sign some healthy pitchers.
  23. I agree with the take that this team seems "detached". They haven't played with any urgency or intensity in whay seems like weeks. I also don't understand Tito in leaving Bradford to start the 8th against the lefty. We all know Bradford is horrible against leftys, and Mills has the stat book to prove it.
  24. What a break. Our only hope is getting someone on for Ortiz.
