  1. I really have a tough time thinking a lineup with Gonzo, Crisp and Dustin will compete with Toronto and NY. These guys are rally killers.
  2. I think Loretta is a VERY good hitting second baseman. 33 doubles, 181 hits, 345 OBP, 285 avg, and just 63 K's in 635 AB's. Only Cano, Roberts and Grudzielanek had better years at 2nd base. Replacing his bat in the lineup is not that easy.
  3. I don't consider offense up the middle to be expendable, especially when the Sox will be trading Loretta's bat for Pedroia's. Lugo's stats, including OBP are better than Counsel and closer to Loretta's. This team cannot afford to add more offense holes to the lineup. Flashing leather is not enough, they need a shortstop who can hit.
  4. Applying any foreign substance to the baseball, which alters the true flight of the ball. In Rogers case it may give him more of a break to his curveball. Pine tar and vaseline are two of the more common ways to "load the ball", hiding the substance in a glove, under a hat, on the neck or behind the ears.
  5. I commented on this in the WS thread, but I think this may deserve a thread of it's own. I'm sure Kenny Rogers may dismiss this as no big deal in the post game interviews, but it certainly looks like he was loading the ball, and I'm sure the Cards will try to make an issue of it. I wonder if MLB will look back on the playoff tapes to see if the mysterious brown spot was on his hand in other games this post season.
  6. The picture by Fox seems to raise speculation that Rogers is loading the ball. I noticed on HD that there was some brown discoloration behind his left ear. By the 2nd inning Rogers had cleaned up his hand and behind his ear. You can tell the Cards bench is buzzing over this. It's hard to imagine that a pitcher would even dare to try loading the ball during a WS when there are cameras everywhere.
  7. The Tigers look like a team that's been off for a week.
  8. I saw this today in the NY Post and I have to agree, I am sick and tired of Fox making fans the focus of any play. No more shots of fans praying, just show the players. http://www.nypost.com/seven/10202006/sports/falls_foul_ball_sports_phil_mushnick.htm
  9. Millar did have a pretty good season in 2006. If he accepts the role he's pitching for, it may make sense. To steal a line from the Blues Brothers, let's the band back together.
  10. It's all hindsight, but Randolph should have played for the tie at home in the 9th and not send up Floyd but instead someone to bunt those two runners over. I really don't know if the Mets could have still tied it up since Wainwright's curve ball was unreal.
  11. If he is injured, most liklely his arm will drop lower during his delivery, as what happened with Pedro this year.
  12. Looking at this as a Sox fan, firing Torre, would take away one clear advantage NY has over the Sox. From what I read, this also may divide the NY clubhouse more since Jeter is a Torre supporter. Seems like a return to the Bronx Zoo days.
  13. It was long rumored that Pedro had some damage in his shoulder. But even so, I recall that Theo was willing to give him 3 years, but not 4. Watching Pedro pitch this season it was very obvious he was hurting, he was tossing side arm in his last start. He did throw well last year and no doubt could have helped the Sox make up the one game they lost the division title. His rehab will not be easy, and while he may try to come back it looks like the end of his career. It's sad, but I'll remember sitting at Busch Stadium and watching him finally shining on a World Series stage in a Red Sox uniform.
  14. Ok lead off hit for the 7th. Now get some clutch hits!!!!!
  15. An awful game capped off by Youk getting beat down the line with 2 outs in the 9th. Huge mistake and something they teach you not to let happen in the minors. I'm not forgetting Timlin who put hitters on base with one run lead. More Maalox for Tito.
  16. Loretta is also a smart hitter and losing him will just create another hitting hole in this lineup next year. This is a key position that needs to be carefully assessed this winter. Who knows if Pedroia is just feeling pressure and needs time off or if he really is overmatched by big league pitching. I happen to think it's the latter.
  17. Absolutely any team that was looking to win this year and be willing to spend to lock up a big time pitcher like Beckett would make the deal. But when things go wrong, now suddenly they're building for the future? As for Meredith, he was treated as poorly as any prospect in recent memory: a rush to the bigs after double A success, and a rush to label him a failure. Sounds like a "win now" mentality.
  18. Lester was untouchable because he was a high draft pick. As good as Sanchez was developing he was expendable. It's still difficult to understand a philosophy of looking towards to the future in a year when 3 top prospects are dealt (Ramirez, Sanchez and Meredith). I include Meredith because he did underperform but he was also thrown into the fire and then just discarded, seemingly without showing any patience or faith in him. I'm not saying it was a bad deal to trade these guys, but it's hard to understand what direction this team is heading.
  19. The past two games against Chicago have been stunning and surprising. The hitting isn't exactly back, but the pitching seems to have made a dramatic turnaround. The next two series are against KC and Baltimore, so if the Sox have any fight in them, this is the opportunity to rattle off some wins before Minnesota comes to town. Aside from the doubleheader in NY, the Sox also get 4 off days this month to rest the pen. I don't know if everyone has given up, but I'd like to see them make a serious run at this.
  20. (sound of crickets chirping)
  21. This one has to be on Francona. Are there any Tito apologists willing to explain this one?
  22. I heard on the radio that Delcarmen was warming up in the 7th. Tito is really stubborn if he still thinks Timlin is the 8th inning guy. I wonder if Delcarmen is still throwing.
