  1. Papelbon is the only proven closer in this whole group. The odds are against anyone else stepping up and proving they have the skill and balls to throw strikes and get the last three outs. I realize, Papelbon and his agent, and the Sox believe he'll have a longer career by starting, but from the team's point of view in 2007, I'd rather have him helping the Sox win 35-40 games as a closer than 15-18 as a starter. Gammons is right. The Sox will most likely have to reconsider moving Papelbon, this spring. I also thought Tavarez was a good fifth starter last year.
  2. Theo has to reduce the years or insert language that gives the Sox an option on any shoulder injury. Boras may throw a fit but again what choice does he have. It's remarkable that Theo may have Boras trapped in a corner TWICE in the same month.
  3. Second Opinion: No long term deals on injured players.
  4. Has there been any official word about Drew's physical? Theo may have timed this out brilliantly and worked a little more leverage for the Sox. I can only hope he hinted to Boras as he left that there may be a problem with Drew's physical, and he'll have to fly back to Boston to get an update.
  5. By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff According to a source with direct knowledge of negotiations, an evening meeting between the Sox and agent Scott Boras has already broken up, suggesting that an impasse remains between the sides. The evening session lasted just 40 minutes. At around 11:40 p.m., Epstein told a crowd of reporters as he left that the Sox officials were headed for dinner and might not return. "Everything is up to Matsuzaka,'' Epstein told the reporters there. About 35 minutes later, Boras, who was accompanied by a Japanese interpreter, left his offices. "Maybe I'll have something to tell you later today,'' he said before leaving in a Cadillac Escalade. That's it. Now it's up to D-Mat. I just hope Theo's plane leaves on time regardless of what happens.
  6. I think it's gets done, with DMat having no idea how close he came to going back, with Boras' reputation damaged in Japan, and with alot of teams thinking twice about bidding on a Japanese star in the future.
  7. The stumbling block is that MLB and the Japan League have agreed to recognize each other's contracts. The Sox had a problem with this a few years ago when they got Millar who had already signed a deal in Japan, The Sox ended up paying the Japanese team.
  8. This is not a question of denying someone to work in the U.S. It is about respecting an existing contract between DMat and Seibu, a contract which MLB and the Japan League have already agreed to acknowledge. That is why there is a posting system, to compensate Seibu which in turn will release Dmat from his Japanese contract.
  9. Good, enough of this Boras side show. Fuel Henry's plane for Boston, and let Boras drive D-mat to LAX for the flight back to Japan.
  10. Completely disagree, Boras is completely helpless here. If her sends DMat back he'll have trouble with future Japanese players. So far, Theo is the one making proposals while Boras makes statements to the press. I'm comfortable if Theo just leaves it on the table and goes back to Boston. Boras' ego may far exceed his skills this time. This mess is becoming too much trouble for a guy who's never played in the big leagues.
  11. This from Kyodo News Service: The Boston Red Sox are lining up a move for veteran former Yomiuri Giants right-hander Masumi Kuwata, major league sources revealed Monday. The Red Sox, who have already acquired Japanese reliever Hideki Okajima and look set to sign Seibu Lions ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, are expected to offer Kuwata a minor league contract that will include bonuses if he is promoted to the majors.
  12. Sounds like Theo takes the upper hand in putting this out in the middle of night and leaving D-Mat and Boras with little choice but to take it, or look like fools. Nice work, let's hope this guy can pitch great.
  13. "In Japan he's known as the national treasure," Boras said. "Here he will be known as Fort Knox." With statements like this, Boras is just being a jerk.
  14. Boras has no leverage and time is running out for him. If this doesn't happen he'll be blamed on boths sides of the Pacific. I heard he said tonight that it is Matsuzaka's decision, so he's already trying to distance himself from any deal to save face.
  15. The Sox spin machine is up and running and Boras is being made to look like a fool. And frankly if Boras is truly whinning about the "posting process" instead of negociating, then he is a fool. This is an agreement between MLB and the Japan League. Apparently Boras' ego is the biggest factor here. It will be interesting to see how the Boras camp tries to spin this in his favor this week.
  16. I'm hoping this is all a pointless exercise to just satisfy Manny. This team cannot afford to overload it's lineup with lefthanded hitters. Manny's bat from the right side is needed and for all his faults he is among the best. I do not see the Red Sox getting better by getting rid of Manny.
  17. I agree. Willie Mo is not an everyday player and like other teams, the Sox now realize this.
  18. The schedule is out and tix go on sale Dec 2. Highlights 2/28 Twins (first game) 3/17 Reds (green jersey and hat day) 3/12 NYY 3/18 Balt in Fort Lauderdale (always a good crowd with all the New England snowbirds) http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20061111&content_id=1739080&vkey=pr_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos
  19. I agree, the amount of money he walked away from and considering Boras is his agent make this a potential problem. I'm sure Theo would like Drew in rightfield, but the money may be insane.
  20. The Sox did offer Pedro 3 years, but they wouldn't go 4. I'm guessing that Boras will demand a 4 or 5 year deal for Matsuzaka and I'm not sure that's something Theo is willing to do.
  21. Loretta's best opponet splits at the plate were against the yankees. .383 avg. 31 H 81 AB For someone new to the rivalry he sure brought his "A" game. Plus he hit .347 with RISP with 2 outs. 26 for 75. Anyone who hits against NY is worth serious consideration. This team will miss his bat and will have to look hard at replacing it.
