Nomar's gone.........That's all i gotta say. Ortiz is awesome with the stick, but the Sox need a better first baseman, and they need it tomorrow. Theo better get out of his pajamas right now and get this done. We're 7.5 games out on July 1st

Terry definately has made some questionable calls. I agree with pitching Foulke in tie-game situations in Fenway. Putting your "closer" in there in the 9th/10th etc gives you a chance to win. Torre does it with Rivera too. That being said, there's no GOOD reason why Williamson shouldn't be pitching more. Obviously if the Sox are down 7-2, 10-3 or whatever, save him for a closer game (because he's one of the best out in the Sox bullpen) but he needs work just like the rest do. Millar needs to ride the pine for a bit. Watch some videos of himself, pick his nose, do SOMETHING other than boot the ball at first. I'd rather see Ortiz out there than Millar right now.

Little didn't have a ton of disciplinary skills either. Keep in mind, he didn't have to deal with Everett. He benched Manny ONCE for skipping a series with the Yankees, but other than that it didn't seem he was too tough with the players either. Francona is a too nice to the players (like Jimy). Millar deserves a nice fat spot on the bench, but he's too nice/afraid to bench him. Nomar, Manny, and Pedro still do whatever they damn well please.

Jimy was a players manager, and I think a little too much so. He tried to make the playing time as even as possible, which at the time, really pissed off the players who thought they should play every day. I think Duquette new he was on the hot seat and panicked, canning Jimy half way through the season and replaced him with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan (who was even less successful). Turns out Duquette and Kerrigan lost their jobs the following spring (when new ownership took over) and hired Grady Little. I think Grady Little was able to get the most out of his players. He really brought those guys together as a team, and brought them to the 7th game of the ALCS (where he made a bad decision). I never understood the firing of Jimy either (although he's in trouble in Houston over alleged misuse of the bullpen), and thought the Little firing was a little over the top. I am not a fan of the way Francona manages at all.

It's hard to imagine LA giving up Mota, Jackson, etc for Nomar, but it's also hard to imagine getting ONLY Perez for Nomar. He seems to be up and down (although very good this year). There's a big difference between Dodger Stadium and Fenway Park! That being said, Perez' away ERA (2.10) is much better than his ERA at home (3.91). I do like his 77/24 K/BB ratio, but lefties are hitting him pretty well (.281). I say he's probably #3 or #4 in the BoSox rotation....Is a #3 or #4 starter worth losing Nomar? (considering he's gotta turn it around sometime, AND Perez is also in his walk year)

The "Moneyball" theory is an interesting one, valued by Beane, and the Red Sox. Francona always talks about "not giving up outs." For me, I think the OBP stuff has its place, but also I think sacrifices also have their place in close games. You can't ALWAYS look for the big inning, because more times than not, it aint gunna happen. Especially against good pitchers in the playoffs. Ask the Atlanta Braves.

Olerud is an interesting option. He is solid with the bat (no power, good contact) and good on D. The link you posted had him platooning with Millar...but I'd just as soon have him take Millar's spot in the everyday lineup permanently, with Millar sent to the bench. Give him more of a chance to be a cheerleader!

JMD, I like your lineup. Ortiz isn't horrible at first, and Bellhorn's bat is better than McCarty (in my opinion). Against Lieber tonight, this lineup should tee off!

This is a low-risk move for the Sox. A minor league contract, for the minimum wage. If he comes back and struggles in Pawtucket....the Red Sox are no worse off, and this move certainly shouldn't prevent them from making another move (if the opportunity arises)

Zenny, You seem to be VERY high on Shoppach. Will there be ANY dropoff from V-Tek this year, and Shoppach next year? Do you see any reason to hold onto V-Tek? (possibly as a mentor to Shopp?)

I live in VT and Montreal is about 2 hours from here, so Montreal moving out of town means no more baseball games up there.... Also, the Vermont Expos (single-A rookie league team) would probably move out of Burlington if the team went south. On the other hand, I dislike Olympic Stadium. So much less character than Fenway Park... BUT, since Montreal HAS to move, Washington DC isn't a bad place. It may hurt the Baltimore Orioles being so close, which is why they are working agaisnt it. It would be really interesting to have baseball in Puerto Rico, but I just don't see that working out.

Saw the report on boston.com. They're saying the same thing. Maybe by mid-July, Pedro (Astacio that is) will be with the club. While this move intreagues me, this isn't enough to get the team over the top!

derek, let me be the first to welcome you to the site! I hope you'll enjoy chatting (and complaining) with us. I'm pretty new too (joined a couple weeks ago) and can't stay away! I saw the documentary you speak of, and I thought that was VERY interesting (the comment about the team being built for Fenway). The other comment I thought was interesting in that documentary was the organization's lack of african american players, and how it hurt them. They turned down BOTH Jackie Robinson AND Willie Mays (two of the greatest players EVER). The old-school mentality is probably a big reason why they just couldn't win back then, and now I think lack of small-ball is a big reason why they can't win today. The Red Sox are being managed by a robot!

I agree Millar needs time off. He probably should spend some time in AAA and see if he can remember how to hit! I'd rather see McCarty at first than Bellhorn. McCarty's sure-handed over there, and can't be WORSE than Millar with the stick. Bellhorn at first means Crespo's the backup if someone else goes down. Yikes!

In 3 weeks, this team will be so far outta the race that it won't matter! Even if Nomar does heat up...they won't catch anyone. I would imagine there's ONE GM dumb enough to take on Garciaparra's salary and attitude. San Fransisco? Los Angeles? Both need a good SS

Well then maybe the problem is Francona. It was obvious to me that the Yankees stealing did just enough emotionally to Lowe to get him off his game and allow them to blow it wide open (that, and shotty D) For cripes sake, steal a base! Sacrifice bunt! Do SOMETHING

Who knows with Manny.... Hargrove is outta work I believe. He managed some successful Cleveland teams.... But he also managed some crappy Baltimore teams.
