  1. Is expected to sign today according to boston.com Thoughts?
  2. I think what Terry's trying to do is the same thing Jimy Williams tried to do a couple years ago. He's got a lot too many players who think they should be playing every day, so he juggles them in on a rotational basis. That's pretty much what Jimy got fired for, BUT that was under different management.
  3. I agree. Epstein still says the one trade he wishes he could have back was the Pittsburgh deal last year where he sent Freddy Sanchez over there for Sauerbeck and Suppan. Granted, Beltran would no doubt turn out better than both these guys (who were rentals, and did not play well at all in Boston), but he's gotta have that in the back of his mind. Theo has made mostly great moves, so I trust in his ability to judge deals (and all the people working for him helping him making decisions), and that he'll do what's best for the team in the end.
  4. Billy Koch was never quite as good as Armando Benitez when on, and he made Billy Beane look like a genius (he got Foulke for Koch I think). Who knows, maybe the setup role will be good for him.
  5. Yes, I think he is. The thing I don't understand is: Why pick up a guy who will make $15 mil next year when Ordonez will no doubt sign for $15mil/less. Yes, they have an option to buy him out for $2 mil. New York has got to consider themselves in contention, despite a
  6. I'm excited about tonight's game. The big question seems to be: Will the Red Sox actually pitch to Bonds? Should they? my take: Will they? Probably not. Seems not many other teams do. Should they? Yes. I love the strategy of the game, but I only think an intentional walk is in order when setting up a double play. With nobody on base, PITCH TO BONDS!! If he beats you, tip your cap. It'll be interesting to listen to (I don't get the games on TV so I have to listen on radio) the Wakefield/Bonds matchup. Timmy gives up his fair share of gopherballs, and Barry likes to hit them! Let's go Sox! I hope yesterday's game was the wake-up the offense needed. And how about Lowe! awesome game, pitching 7 shutout innings...at Coors no less
  7. I agree with the theory of developing prospects too, which is why I brought up the question in the first place. I think Baird is doing the right thing shooting for the stars at first. Hell, maybe someone will get desperate and give him what he wants. I also think that if nobody does, the trading price will go down. Zenny, you know more about the Sox prospects than I do. What would be a reasonable price for Beltran given that he's a 3-month rental?
  8. http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/17501.htm This article (although it's a Yankee source) is reporting the Yankees are interested in Beltran mostly to block the Red Sox from him. 2 questions: 1. Should the Red Sox try to get Beltran (the cost according to this article is Abe Alvarez, Kevin Youkilis, and a couple other prospects). 2. What would that mean for Johnny Damon? My 2 cents: 1. I have a hard time giving up Youkilis, I really like what he's done so far for the team. I think this is too much to give up for a rent-a-player, but Beltran would look pretty good in CF for Boston. You've got to give up quality to get quality, so maybe give up Alvarez IF you think you can sign Beltran only. Keep Youk though, and if the Royals insist on Youk, pass on the deal. 2. IF Beltran joined the Red Sox today, I think this means doom for Kevin Millar, not Johnny Damon. Damon has a lot more range than Manny Ramirez, and would probably shift to left field if this move went down (making Ramirez a DH). I really like Millar as a person, but he hasn't produced like we all hoped he would this year.
  9. Hidalgo's always been a high-potential player. The Mets have GOT to believe they can turn him around, because that's the only motivation I can see for going out to get him.
  10. I hope you're right....I hope they snap out of this and get hot. They'll need to get hot SOON before the Yankees become uncatchable
  11. The Astros have an outfielder by the name of Jason Lane who they plan on playing in Hidalgo's spot. This takes the Mets out of the Beltran sweepstakes for the 2004 season, but they may make a splash in the offseason.
  12. I don't think there's anyone who questions Nomar's heart when he's on the playing field. He has always (and probably always will) give 100%. I lost A LOT of respect for the off-the-field Nomar last winter, when I found out he turned down not one, but two fair contract offers from the Red Sox. He publicly says he wants to stay, but behind closed doors it was about the $$$ I still hope that Nomar and the Red Sox come to some sort of agreement, and Nomar spends his career in Boston. He's the type of player on the field that Boston needs. However, if he wants $15mil per year, he's probably going to have to get it from George.
  13. I predict this game will be all-or-nothing for Lowe. They say his game is "on" when he's getting a lot of grounders (good in Coors), and if he's giving up flyballs, bad news. Some groundball pitchers do well in Coors (Tom Glavine) Some don't do so well (Mike Hampton) Coors is a mystery. I had nightmares (not literally) about the Sox in that ballpark (because of it's reputation), and I will be relieved that they won't have to play there again this season.
  14. yeszir, Thanks. I'm not saying I have the solution either, I'm just REALLY frustrated right now with the way the Sox are playing!
  15. I think the Red Sox don't have the team atmosphere they had last year. I think this has GOT to be partly Francona's leadership. Make it 5.5 games back before long.
  16. The Red Sox aren't playing good, consistent baseball right now. What's wrong? I think the players are thinking more about upcoming contracts than the team. Other opinions? I think a major shakeup is in order. Rattle the cage a bit.
