No, because he can't throw out baserunners, and probably has no effect on the pitchers ability to make good pitches. SSS, but Varitek's Late and Close numbers is a .746 OPS. His normal OPS is .758.

There are no other bats to take his spot. And no, Varitek's vaunted game calling ability does not compensate for his horrific plate appearances.
