  1. It really feels like Clement throws 30+ pitches an inning. He's been effective, though.
  2. Late April is the best case scenario. More likely early to mid-May. No rush.
  3. In his first start for Portland, Pap went 6 innings giving up two solo homers (5 total hits) while striking out 7 and walking none. Portland is a homerun happy ballpark, so don't be surprised if the HR numbers rise this season, but I expect the peripherals to remain great.
  4. So far, Shopp is 2 for 9 on the young season with a homerun and a 0/3 BB/K. I doubt I'm going to do daily updates like I did last season, especially with Tek locked in for 4 more years. Still, I do believe Shoppach will become an above-average everyday defense and power catcher for someone, but probably not us. He'll probably have a big year in Pawtucket through July and then we trade him for something we need at the All-Star Break. Actually, we may not even need to make a trade at the break, depending on Wade Miller.
  5. Whew, thank God! I was going to go crazy if I couldn't find boxscores all season. Thanks.
  6. Where are you getting the numbers from? The two sources I used last year (baseballamerica.com and sportsnetwork.com) don't give box scores anymore.
  7. Brad Lidge's 14.5 K/9 rate and Eric Gagne's consecutive save streak record both say hi. Mo was the best closer in the game. He is no longer.
  8. He did kill a bunch of rallies and made some crucial errors. Although, those two runs at the end of the game today were great.
  9. The guys at FSNE are already talking about life without Damon next season. They all agree that he's as good as gone.
  10. I love watching Mo fall apart. The only thing more satisfying would've been if Timlin's pitch knocked Jeter unconscious.
  11. Yanksin2010, you're just being irrational. Look at the numbers. Nearly identical. Schmidt had no control either. They have the exact same kind of stuff. Now Clement has Dave Wallace, Jason Varitek and Curt Schilling in his corner. Forget about it, this was a better signing than Pavano. The game he pitched yesterday would've been just as good as Pavano's if this team knew how to play any defense. Oh, and since when is Clement going on the DL? Wishful thinking?
  12. There aren't very many anymore. Lou Merloni, Damian Miller, Kerry Ligtenberg, Matt Herges, Cory Lidle, Tom Martin, Frank Menechino and Brendan Donnelly are the active players along with Millar. Brian Daubach was one of them. Here's a full list: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/legendary/replacement_players.shtml You gotta love the name Millar made up for himself: Mike Butcher. That's definitely something he would think of. I'm surprised he didn't pick something like Jethro Steel.
  13. Schmidt- Age 29 in 2002: 185 1/3 IP, 148 H, 73 BB, 196 K, 110 ERA+ Clement- Age 29 in 2004: 181 IP, 155 H, 77 BB, 190 K, 123 ERA+ Similarities are scary, aren't they? You should be nervous. Once we get Miller back in 3 weeks, you should be very nervous.
  14. Matt Clement is the next Jason Schmidt. Look at what each one did to this point in their respective careers. Their stuff is very similar. Schmidt put it together at about 30, Clement will also. Dave Wallace, Jason Varitek, Curt Schilling and David Wells should all help in that effort. Edgar Renteria hasn't been impressive at all. He's swinging at everything and making mistakes in the field. Damn.
  15. Moss is a RF, so none of this affects him anyway. Trot may be an injury liability by '07 anyway.
  16. Ramon Vazquez > Pokey Reese Jay Payton > Gabe Kapler Roberto Petagine and Dave McCarty = Doug Mientkiewicz Adam Stern = Dave Roberts I'm not worried.
  17. Narveson came over in the Larry Walker deal. Nothing special. He may contribute to the pen at some point, but I wouldn't expect a whole lot. Good news: We don't have to pay for Kim. Bad news: We had to pay for part of Johnson to be released. It's a wash.
  18. If at 42 years old, Jamie Moyer improves, I think the entire world will be completely shocked. Stick a fork in him, he's done. Madritsch is pretty much Bucky Jacobson: an older career minor-leaguer with little upside who filled in for a limited time due to injury/ineffectiveness on a bad team. Both his walk and K rates are poor and he's going to be 29 next season. Yuck. By the way, Aaron Sele is going to be taking over for Ryan Franklin in the rotation. Hilarious. Joel Pineiro and his career 6.51 K rate and 118 ERA+ take over as staff ace. Again, hilarious. Boone is in a steady decline. Sexson will not match his Milwaukee numbers in Safeco, which is hell on RHH's. I'm a Beltre believer because he did it in the minors and always had the potential for a season like '04, but he and Ichiro cannot be an entire team. SFiT, you are going to win this bet handily, my friend.
  19. Matt Clement is going to step it up huge this season.

Hey, I heard Kim has a hang-nail... someone put him on the DL! Anastacio Martinez is out of options too. It doesn't look like he's going to amount to much, though, which is unfortunate. If he could get consistent with his curve and change, he'd be deadly.
  21. I'll put it this way. There is a 0.01% chance that Duncan could reach that level. But still, there is that chance.
  22. You're right actually. Any one prospect could turn into a great player. The chances of it happening for Duncan are slim right now, but he has potential. He needs to make some serious adjustments to reach that level, but hey, even Chad Spann could even turn into one of those guys.
  23. ahhchon, I agree that Nomar was the man, but he clearly wasn't at the end there. I'm definitely a pre-'03 fan, but GarciaPopUp was a pretty good description of him for a while there. He's probably one of my favorite players, but this team needed the defense at SS and there was clearly something wrong with him physically that made him a liability.
  24. What's good for Duncan's chances to be a Yankee is that there is a 1B opening. There are a couple more relevant things bad for Duncan's chances of being a Yankee: 1) He's a Yankee prospect... bye 2) If his pitch recognition doesn't come, he won't even be a major leaguer 3) If all breaks right, the Yankees will have sought out a long-term solution at 1B within the 2 1/2 to 3 years it's going to take him to be even a slightly capable starting player.
