Just didn't know him as well as you do.  Or thought he was capable of some adjustment.

I certainly never thought we'd have a guy with a K/BB ratio twice as bad as Middlebrooks or Dalbec and believe he's capable of staying in the big leagues.

You'd think, once he realizes pitchers aren't throwing him strikes, he could just decide, before the pitch: I'm taking this, no matter what. Just by chance, he could get more walks of better pitches, when he decides, "I'm swinging, no matter what," like he seems to do, now.

This season 31-year-old Michael Conforto posted 1.3 fWAR in 130 games while 31-year-old Masataka Yoshida has posted 1.4 fWAR in 248 games over his two-year MLB career.

The San Francisco Giants are unlikely to trade Robbie Ray and their former closer for a downgrade from Conforto.

I was thinking Ray for Yoshida straight up. Doval did not have a good year. His WHIP was over 1.5. His ERA was near 5. He walked nearly 6 batters per 9 IP, but the 12 K/9 was good.

Ray: $50M/2

Yoshida: $54M/3

I'd give Yoshida, Wikelman and Murphy for the two.

All else being even, an established starter is worth more than a designated hitter.

The Giants need the high upside of Robbie Ray more than they need the annual sub-1.0 WAR of Masataka Yoshida.

Indeed. We'd likely have to still kick in some money for year 3 of Yoshida or add a SP'er like Criswell or Priester.

Conforto is better on defense, but both are well below average outfielders and should be full time dh's.  The thumb injury and shoulder injury obviously dragged down Yoshida's overall numbers, but even then from 6/24 he lead the Sox in wRC+ 132 with .369 obp. In that same time span he put up a 1.2 fwar.  I guess the Giants could resign Conforto and hope he improves on his .309 obp and turns around his subpar defense.  And the Sox would probably pass on this trade as Ray has only pitched 34 innings the last 2 years and while Doval was once a high leverage reliever those days appear to be gone due to a 6.0 bb/9.
